Vehicle Detail

LOW RESERVE This has been among the best cars I have ever owned, I will be sad to see it go. Whoever buys this car will have a real gem. This car gets over 40 mpg around town, turns heads and gets complimented nearly daily. Not too many cars can boast that! Here is why this is the Rabbit you don’t want to miss: -The body on this Rabbit has not been ‘Fixed’, ‘Repaired”, or even more alarming, ‘Restored’. It hasn’t needed it. There is no clear evidence of bodywork or paintwork, ever. The paint in the engine bay and in the interior is nearly a perfect match to the exterior, which is even across the entire car, including the roof (which has a factory sunroof, not a value-dropping aftermarket unit). The body is VERY solid. There is one very small rust spot on the car, in the spare tire well. There are a couple parking lot dings on the car, but only one that I feel can't be repaired by a paintless-dent-removal professional - see passenger side rear fender. There is virtually no corrosion on the entire car, which brings benefits far beyond bodywork. -Mechanically, this car has been well maintained, and it shows. It is driven between 30 and 100 miles daily and needs no immediate attention to continue being daily driven. This is a 30 year old VW that we are talking about, so expect some constant tinkering. Recent work includes a passenger side CV axle, heater core, valve cover gasket, and shift linkage bushings. Parts and upkeep is generally inexpensive for these older Volkswagens, especially if you are mechanically minded and can do the work yourself. Everything electrically on the car works, including the dome light, though the rear defrost is not at 100% efficiency, and the intermittent stage for the wipers is no longer intermittent. All of the gauges work, as do all of the turn signals, hazards, brights, etc. The engine starts up (one glow cycle from the plugs) with very little smoke. On the coldest days, you’ll want to run the plugs for two cycles, but this car has the updated ‘fast’ plugs, so you won’t be sitting there forever and a day waiting for them to warm up. When the engine is warm, you pretty much have to floor it going uphill for it to smoke. The injector pump has not been ‘modified’ or ‘tweaked’ or any other excuse. This is not a race car, and if you don’t try to drive it like one, it should last a very long time. The timing belt was changed at 185k miles. The original 5 speed transmission is the desirable “FN” model with the .91 4th gear and .71 5th gear. The transmission is quiet and shifts great. This car gets an honest 43mpg around town, and even better on the highway. -The interior is nice (relatively) on this car… one of the many benefits from a NW car. There is one small split in the dash, with some sealant, it should not get worse… and is barely noticeable as it is. The sunroof does not leak, and functions perfectly. The issues with the interior are a couple tears in the original drivers seat upholstery, and the foam is slightly broken down on the outer side. The drivers seatbelt reel needs to be rebuilt or replaced, and the headliner needs to be recovered (like every Rabbit). I have the upholstery frame for the sunroof section, and will be included with the car. The fold-and-tumble rear seat allows for massive cargo space…You will be surprised with how much you can carry in this car. The carpet has no major stains, and the car has no odd smells. -As for upcoming maintenance… We had a couple warm days this past week, and the temperature started to climb a little bit in stop and go traffic, so plan for a radiator/water pump this summer. The brakes are getting low, so I will have the fronts replaced and rears checked before ownership is transferred. If/when the bidding goes over $3200 I will replace the radiator and water pump. The Rabbit does leak a little oil, though rarely drips. It looks like the majority of the oil is coming through the oil filter housing and the switch mounted on it. I’ll try to get a clear photo of this. There are just not many left in this condition. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or call 503-319-3499. Please realize that this car is also advertised locally, I retain the right to take offers until the reserve price has been met, at which point I will let the auction run its course. Get this Rabbit before the prices skyrocket in the early summer months! I am only selling this car because I came across a diesel Dasher wagon which better suits my needs as a commuter/work truck… I’m sure to regret letting this car go. I am willing to bring the car to a shop of your choice (in Portland) for a pre-purchase inspection. Inspection is at your expense. If there are additional photos you want, please feel free to request them, and please be descriptive. This car can be shipped for approximately $0.50 per mile. My lowered reserve price is set less than an offer I initially declined the first week I had the car for sale… Of course, you can always avoid a potential bidding war, Buy-it-now, or make me an offer I can’t refuse. Thank you for looking at my auction. If this is your first older car, please remember that it is nearly 30 years old, and in excellent shape relatively. Happy bidding, you’ll be glad you did! Good luck! Please call 503-319-3499 or email for questions!
