Vehicle Detail

Am relisting this as the previous "winner" ( wilzeus2014 ) was a $4600 non-payer. So, here I am. Am selling my beloved Ram 1500 SLT. Quad cab. I purchased this in 2009. I am the second owner. " Sam the Ram " has served me well, but, am doing a LOT of driving now, and this vehicle is better suited for someone else at this point. This will be a rather detailed description of the truck, so grab a cup of coffee, sit down and take a read. I am someone who believes 100% in a complete description of a vehicle...good and bad, so, will cover EVERYTHING. If you purchase this vehicle, expect to spend at least an hour with me when you pick it up as I go over the truck with you. This is a late model 2002.... might as well be a 2003. This is important to know as some parts from the early 2002 model will NOT fit this vehicle. First of all, this IS a used truck. It has been well taken care of, otherwise it would not have made it to 275,000 miles. It IS dependable. On 6/28, I did an almost 700 mile trip from my place near San Antonio to Dallas, Fort Worth and other locations and then back here..... in one day. It averaged about 14 MPG. This is pretty common for it, but, in the spring, fall, or cooler weather when driving on the highway, I have seen as high as 16.4 at 68 or 72 MPH. That seems to be its sweet spot. When I hit the toll road at Seguin and the speed limit goes to 85, I get about 13.5. Rarely have I seen it below 13 MPG, with the exception of far West Texas, when I take the side roads, which can be pretty hilly. Then the MPG drops to mid to high 12's. Even pulling a trailer I get 12's. In the hills with a trailer, it will drop to the low 11's or high 10's. However, when pulling a fully loaded 8x10 Uhaul from Indianapolis to San Antonio last year, I got 13 almost the entire trip. December trip to Albuquerque and back over 3 days covered almost 1600 miles. Needless to say, I DO trust this truck on trips, and it is still my daily driver. The exterior of the vehicle is in good shape. Not perfect, but good. The pictures shown are how I keep the vehicle. I did not dress it up just for Ebay. The engine compartment I wash only once a year, though. There are a couple of small dings in the body ( which I will show in a link to the video ) and a few scratches from a cat along with a few others is what you will find. There are 3 dings in the chrome bumper next to the hitch. There is a small dent at the lower part of the passenger door that has been there for years. However, I may pop that out by the time this is posted. Bed of the truck has seen its share of use. Still some dried white latex paint in the bed and some on the lip of the bed. I am guessing that some good elbow grease or a power washer could take that out. There are some spots that could use a touch up in the bed. I have a black rubber insert for the bottom of the bed that I use.... it is a good 1/4" thick. It has gotten a lot of use let me tell ya. Of course, you could always have blue Line-X sprayed in the bed and be done with it, too. Interior. Interior is good as well. With the exception of the top dash. I was in Indianapolis in 2013 and the first night, truck got broken into. Not sure how they did it as they did not break glass, but they busted the hell out of the upper front dashboard. I removed it and have not replaced it. You could get a replacement from a junkyard, however, the plastic that the Dodge interior provider used during that time realllllly sucked. You can buy a new one from Mopar for about $650-$800, or, there are a couple of good aftermarket ones for about $450 here on Ebay. If you get one, make sure you pick the 2003 Ram and not the 2002. Since this is a late year model, the replacement upper is 2 piece, whereas the 2002 is just a one piece and will not fit. There is a stain on the carpet in the front from a leaky heater core. I may make another attempt to have this cleaned. One dash bulb is burned out. I don't drive a lot at night, so it does not bother me a lot, however, you might want to get it replaced. Radio, CD, electric door locks, all work well. I replaced the drivers seat upholstery with aftermarket upholstery, and replaced the foam under it as well. This is not a seat cover. It is actual replacement upholstery. Heater and AC work. Heater still has an antifreeze smell from the leak a few years back, but after about 4 or 5 minutes, it goes away. Since I live in south Texas, obviously the heater does not get used a lot. I was living in Indianapolis for a year, though, and it got a LOT of use. Can't say it is the best heater, though. I do believe that the heater air mix doors may need to be looked at. A/C was just charged about a month ago. Engine and mechanical items: This is powered by a 5.9L Magnum. This was the last year for the 5.9 L Magnum before Dodge went with the 5.7L Hemi. 46RE automatic four speed overdrive. 3.55 rear gears. 26 gallon fuel tank. 6'3" bed. In 2011, I noticed a nasty knock upon startup that would go away after about 10 minutes, but after a couple of weeks seemed to hang on more, so, I said screw it. Pulled the motor and had another put in. This was at 129,000 miles. About 20,000 miles ago, I started noticing blue smoke at startup. Would go away after that, though. Had compression checked and all cylinders were 160lbs, with the exception of #7, which was 158. The culprit for the oil consumption appears to be valve stem seal on one of the valves in the #8 cylinder. As the plugs were changed in April, it was the only one that was oil fouled. I would replace it, but I just can't maneuver around like I used to be able to do 40+ years ago. So, I just add oil when needed, and that is about 2 quarts every 1000 miles. It does use oil in town driving when sitting in traffic. If I am idling, you see a puff come out when I accelerate. Regular driving, nothing. Have even had people follow me just to make sure and it only occurs while sitting or when leaving from sitting at a stoplight. On the highway, I can kick it down to a passing gear and no one sees any sort of blue smoke. So, am just going to say that it might be something you would want to either do yourself or have a mechanic do. On this truck, it is on the left bank ( as you face the truck from the front grille ) where there is nothing hindering you getting at the valve cover. Friends who have done this in the past say that if you have the right tools ( key words " right tools " ), it takes about an hour or 2. There is an odd "pulse" to the engine sometimes... usually only 100RPM when cruising along. No rhyme or reason to it at all. It may go on for a mile or for 20 miles. It has done this FOR YEARS. Check engine light has been on since I got this vehicle. I bought the truck from a friend in 2009 and even he had it. My OBDII scanner says it is a evaporative leak. Probably in one of the hoses. I can reset the light and it may come back on in a mile, or in a week. I ignore it except when I take it in for yearly state inspection. I reset it and it passes. Transmission. This is another one of those things that, personally, I should have fixed back when I bought the truck, but have just lived with it. There are 2 items here. 1. Occasionally, the overdrive will slam in and out all within about a 1/2 second. It will startle the hell out of you and it gets your attention. Usually occurs whenever the hell it wants to really wake you up.2. Overdrive will slip. If I am on the highway is when this occurs the most. I can be cruising along and you will feel a vibration thru your foot or feel it thru the floorboard.... usually when I have the truck in cruise control or on a slight incline. I tap the brake to take it out of overdrive and it is happy again. However, it also will do it when you are driving while not using the cruise control as well. I just let up on the gas a tad and it is ok. If I am driving under 60 and going up a hill, I can tap the button on the shift lever to take it out of OD and that does it. That button is good to have.... helps with passing or going up a grade and you don't want to kick it down a gear. I CAN pull a trailer...and have done so many times...up to 16ft with a load on it.... not good to use the OD while towing. However, I do it on level ground and just make sure it does not lug things down a lot. Obviously, in hilly areas, I do not use the OD while pulling the trailer. This is the original transmission. Only serviced once, and that was when the engine was replaced. you can find a used 46RE at a junkyard and replace it for about $800 or so. A competent rebuilder or remanufacturer will do a good, thorough rebuild and use upgraded parts as well as a good torque converter. Tires. About 20,000 left on them. I have bought the Prodigy brand from Discount Tire and have been more than happy with them. Good grip and excellent wear. I believe that the Prodigy brand is made by Yokohama. The road hazard is transferrable with the vehicle. I also have 4 new drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic brake pads that I will be including with this sale as well. In the end, it is a good truck. I would keep this thing until I could not keep it running anymore. But, I have come to the conclusion that it is no longer right for me...and I don't want to see it just sit around doing nothing like some people will do, when someone else could actually use it. I am purchasing a vehicle that will get me better fuel consumption on my long work trips...and, being self employed, THAT is important right now. Questions? Please feel free to ask away! I try and answer as fast as I can. You will see that I do not accept PayPal. This used to be a good service, but have gotten burned a couple of times in the past, so, I have decided to revert back to cashiers check, cash or, will accept a personal check. However, if paying by personal check, you will have to pay ahead and allow for it to clear before you can take possession of this truck. I was trying to put a clickable link to a video on the truck, but Ebay has changed a few things and I have not been able to do such as of yet. So, if you want to get a link to my video, just drop me a note and I will send it to you, ok?
