1998 Land Rover Discovery 1 - California Car survivor- Read carefully so you can understand what a great Discovery 1 this is! This 1998 badged LSE is the last of Series 1 configurations. 13,144 were manufactured for the USA 1998 market with a list price then of $38,000. LSE versions had chrome bumpers and color keyed exterior trim and alloy wheels. In England, Series 1 Discoveries are so popular, Body off Frame restorations are common. At least a dozen specialty magazines are published by enthusiasts who maintain these trucks with articles about what they modified, much like USA Hot-Rod mags. Basic OE specs are: 4.0liter V8, 182 hp; 233 lb. ft. torque, GEMS management fuel injected. Salvage title due to value assigned by insurance - when a windscreen and associated trim was replaced due to sand damage, the claim cost pushed into the salvage category. I work at an Audi dealer with an LR store next door so many items have had repairs through the dealer and by myself. Repairs for year 2017 include: Fuel Pump; interior mirror; Headliner (retained stowage nets); front brake pads; California Smog Test - passed first time. Tags just received 'til 20192016 include: Power Steering box-rebuilt; Rebuild Power Steering pump; Replace interior Rearview mirror w map lights (new); Replace Crank sensor (bell housing); LH front ABS Sensor; Repack front wheel bearings; Air Filter; Battery (Interstate)2015 include: Rear Brake Rotors w Pads; Power Steering Feed Hose; Feed & Return Heater Hose; Brake Reservoir;2014 include: set of 5 Tires; Tie Rod Ends; A/C Panel Switch; Rear Mud Flaps; PS Reservoir; Left Rear Door Regulator; Engine Oil Cooler Hose set; Transmission Cooler Hose set; Windshield and surrounding trim.2013 include: F & R diff oil; Trans fluid; Brake Fluid Flush; Brake Switch.2011 - prior owner replace entire Transfer Case ($4000+) 1994 was first year for Discovery 1 through 1998 which transitioned to Discovery 2 into 1999. With 5 years of production, there are still a lot of spares and Land Rover still supplies most critical parts. A enthusiastic aftermarket industry makes a very good living supplying spare parts (British Pacific and similar outfits) Strong points in behalf of the Series 1 were simple-reliable coil spring suspension, overbuilt driveline, Robust transmission and a what appears to be a rather low horsepower V-8 engine and a solid heavy body. Power is applied in such a smooth manner - exiting from 6" deep sand is accomplished with no wheelspin. I have son's that are Eagle Scouts so when desert camp outs were in our area, I could always count on at least one dad needing a pull out of the sand. A transfer case center locking differential is unique though offers fantastic off-road control for drivers who know the benefits. Going to this VIN - runs strong on all 8 cylinders, no check engine light. Delivers a max of about 17 mpg on the highway - closer to 12 mpg in the city. This is full time 4wd - there is no disconnect. 70 mph on the freeway - no problem other than the wind noise from essentially a big brick being propelled through the air Doors open and close like a vault, Tailgate swings to right. No jump seats in this Disco 1 though quite reasonable prices on EBAY will make this a 7 passenger truck. Brakes strong and truck stops straight. ABS light goes off every time once about 10 mph hit and they get a signal from all wheel sensors. Both sunroofs work every time though living in the desert, I do not use them often. Each Sunroof has 2 retractable screens. Power steering smooth, no odd noises. Transmission shifts smooth. All windows raise/lower from center console switches, front heated seats warm up. Seats and interior leather in great shape for age, no tears. Rear sear has functioning center armrest, Headliner recently replaced by independent upholstery shop - control panel loose on headliner, will need refit. Tech retained the small parcel nets and retractable sunroof shade operation. Cruise control does not work though dash indicator lights up - may need vacuum line replacement. Current issue is that when hot out (it gets to 120+ here) engine will have a long initial crank. Key off and on 3 times and truck starts right up. May indicate that in heat, fuel pressure lost at regulator. ( have pulled FI injectors with rail and found no leaking injectors) or other issue, repair needed unless not an issue in cooler climate. I bought this Disco late 2013 and have driven about 25,000 miles As you consider whether to bid, think about what you won't have to do on this Disco 1 (T-Case, Trans cooler hoses, P/S hoses; P/S steering box and pump hoses; Trans cooler hoses; LH speed sensor; ) these are a few high cost areas already dealt with (especially the T-Case!). Body panels clean, a few minor scratches and small dings. Interior has wear from 19 years - dash in great condition. Includes cargo cover and accessory pet grid/barrier. Please ask questions!
