Vehicle Detail

1965 Honda CB77 305 Superhawk I have restored about 40 bikes in past 10 years and this one, without a doubt, was my biggest challenge. It was in very poor cosmetic condition when I purchased it, but thankfully it turned over and popped with starting fluid. I completely disassembled the bike except for removal of the motor. The front fender was badly dented in several spots and a friend did a decent job of straitening it. The frame was sanded, coated with rust block and painted with ceramic engine enamel. Tank was in pretty good shape, did fill few minor dents and painted with lacquer and clear coat. The side tins and front fender were painted a close to original color and clear coated. The chrome tank covers are just fair… a few very minor dents but noticeable pitting. All other aluminum and chrome parts were polished and/or painted... the handle bar was so badly pitted I had to sand, prime and paint with a “chrome” paint, tho doesn’t look too bad. Rear wheel is very nice, front one is about 80% good. There is a 6-inch section with very noticeable pitting, but guy that installed the tires said inside is in good shape. New tires, tubes and battery were installed and seat was recovered. The pan and foam were actually in decent shape. Headpipes on bike are near perfect but mufflers had to be replaced, I think the reverse cone ones I put on match the period of bike and fit like they were made for it. New correct style mirrors and little tail flap were sourced from Indonesia. I went thru the electrical system and was able to get all lights and starter working correctly. The bike was given a complete tune up. It had new coils on when I got it. I put in new points, set the timing and it has great spark. I also adjusted valves and cam chain. The one part that was missing, and I couldn’t find on eBay was the crankcase top cover. With help of buddy I fabricated one. It’s not great, but better than an open space with all the wires and such exposed. The carbs were cleaned and when reassembled it started almost on first push of starter button. It was, however, running very rich as would only idle with air screws completely removed. I did install pods for filters but that should make it run lean if anything. Go figure… I do have original rubber tubs and filters but in bad shape. I put in slightly smaller jets and is much better but still think a little rich. I did need to take off clutch cover and separate discs from plates, and clutch seems to be working well now. I tested compression 150 one side 125 the other and that side does smoke a bit, but put some oil in and compression shot up to 180 so possibly a stuck ring. On my last ride it accelerated well and shifted thru all gears. The front brake is very good rear OK. Now for the issues… When I would go to start the bike the kick start lever would rotate forward and end up below the foot peg. I removed it as electric works so well and am pretty sure alternator is putting out at least some juice. Also when I roll the bike backwards there is sometimes a clicking noise. Gauges are working (including instrument lights) but sometime go a little whacky and shoot way up. So, guess it boils down to a very complete and largely original Superhawk that runs and drives but may need some engine/ trans work to be perfect. Would never be a show bike but would make one hell of a nice driver. I have put so many hours into this bike already…just need to let someone else take it to the next step. I am selling the bike with no reserve, as-is with no guarantee and no return. I will not ship or crate the bike but if seller pays in full he is welcome to arrange for pick up and delivery. Oh...one very important part... the bike comes with a numbers matching signed and undated title from what I believe to be the second owner. Comes with pretty complete tool kit also. Title is dated 2-28-69. I have tried to describe this bike as accurately as possible, pointing out issues I have found, but will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
