Vehicle Detail
1964 BMW R50/2 I've had this machine since 1999, when I started to restore it to solid running condition. It's been a lot of funbut I've reached a position in life where I need to cut down the hobbies a bit so have decided to let this one go. The bike is a solid runner rather than a show-bike restoration and I've noted the 'incorrect' things below. Its ready to ridewith 5932 miles since the restoration in 2000. With the correctly-sized Heidenau tires its a great handling old machine! NOTE THE MILEAGE IS THAT SINCE THE RESTORATION NOT THE ACTUAL MILEAGE, WHICH IS UNKNOWN The Good: - Matching frame and case numbers- Clean Texas title- Genuine Akront alloys in excellent condition with stainless spokes- Correct size Heidenau tires in excellent condition- Speedometer restoration by VDO- Ed Korn Crank Shaft, new Pistons and fresh bore on cylinders- nice repro wiring harness- Stainless hardware throughout- Great stainless flanders-style sidestand from Vech - this is a big plus for daily use.- Suspension components renewed during restoration- Fresh engine oil 40w Shell Rotella T from older high-zinc batch (remaining stock of 4-5 qt included). Trans, driveshaft, and drive have fresh synthetic GL-4 gear oil.- Denfield seat in good shape- Original Sport tank with functioning storage compartment- Original keyswitch in good condition- Fenders, Tank, and headlight housing have glasurit paint. The tank and rear fender striping were done by Blue Moon years ago.- European low handlebars- Chrome exhaust in good condition - exhaust threading on heads in excellent condition- Includes additional basketcase engine, TWO additional transmissions, and a bunch of misc small parts. Both transmissions are undamaged, turn and shift but I do not know their condition beyond that.- Includes Ed Korn engine toolkit, service and parts manuals and restoration books. The Not So Good - chip in the tank finish from the handlebar being installed too low at first - see pic- chip in powercoat on rear shock tower - see pic- The transmission does leak a little bit from the input shaft, which collects in the 'shelf' under the flywheel housing. This is NOT the engine rear main. - The front fender got scratched up during a misadventure in the garage and I had it resprayed (Glasurit) and restriped locally. The striping isn't bad but the width of the smaller inner line is a little too wide.- other minor wear and tear from 5K of use over 17 years, which can be seen in the images.- a few parts are chromed that shouldn't be - air cleaner cover, for example Other Notes - Frame is powdercoated- Pinstriping on tank is under urethane clear, fender striping is on top of paint (keeps accidental fuel spill from damaging striping)- Alough title is mileage 'EXEMPT', the rebuilt speedometer mileage represents the mileage since the restoration- has solid state battery that is a little smaller than the vintage type- discreet 6v battery tender harness wired in at headlight Please contact me if you have any other questions about the bike.
