Vehicle Detail

Offering for sale my 1947 Comet scooter. Comet was a very small scooter manufacturer in the MidWest that never really made it into mass production. They advertised their scooters in the back pages of Popular Mehanic's magazines back in 1947 and 1948 and, prior to that, you could send away for a kit to build your own scooter using their parts. This scooter is a model 805 "pickup" which boasts a beastly 1.5 HP Clinton 700AS model kick start motor. The motor runs strong and starts easy but it could probably use a refresh. Clinton engine parts and gaskets are still readily available. The original clutch is included with the sale but I recently replaced the chain and installed a new Torque-Master clutch since the original unit needs repair. I also replaced the throttle and choke cables but I have the originals that will go with the scoot. The front headlight is not believed to be an original Comet accessory but it is a nice period-correct Guide headlight however the glass lens is cracked. The body and frame are in great structural shape but it does need some finish work to make the shell straight again. The shell was sandblasted years ago as the prior owner had intended to restore it. The tires are original, and cracked, but they still hold air at 25 psi.I've been researching information on this scooter since I bought it several years ago and the information is scarce. I have gathered my information from original brochures, Popular Mechanic's, The US Scooter Museum and scooter/mini bike expert Dick DeBuse to corroborate the information I've found. With regard to the value, I was only able to find one record of a public sale dating back to a Mid America Motorcycle auction held in Las Vegas in 2009 (https://www.proxibid.com/…/1947-Come…/4394168/LotDetail.asp…). In the auction listing for their scooter it was stated their item was one of only 3 known Comet 805 models known to exist, and that theirs was the only complete unit. The scooter sold for $5,100 but it was in restored condition. I have no way to know how many of these particular models are left, and we all know auction listings can be embellished, but I do know that I have been unable to find many other Comets, let alone the same 805 model over the last 5-6 years of searching. There is one model 705 pickup (very similar appearance) that is on display in the Dennis Carpenter museum in Charlotte so that will provide some idea as to what the bike looks like in original condition. I have some additional sales brochures which illustrate the other Comet scooter models available. I will include it with the scooter sale. I do not have a way to ship this item so local pickup is preferred however I can make the scooter available for a shipper of your choice, at your expense. I reserve the right to end this auction at any time due to the scooter being listed locally. On Feb-11-16 at 15:26:33 PST, seller added the following information: Pictures added per request(s) and I also uploaded a short YouTube video (https://youtu.be/TXURa64BsRw) of it running. If the link doesn't work just search for 'Rare Comet Scooter - 805 Pickup'. In the video you'll notice I am pushing the throttle back to home position with my finger. I couldn't find a return spring so I just used my finger.
