The Elan M100 was first introduced to the world in 1989. There were only 3,885 built worldwide by time production ended in 1992. Of those, only 539 were federalized for the U.S. and a mere 117 were specifically designated for California. These hand-built/low-production sports cars are considered (even to this day) one of the most reliable Lotus cars ever built. Much of this is due to the fact that the Isuzu 1.6L turbo engine was used as its power plant. This workhorse motor was found to be extremely reliable, inexpensive to maintain, and parts were readily available. Weighing only 2,250 pounds, the dual overhead cam/16-valve engine with its air-to-air intercooled turbocharger made this roadster a pleasure to drive. And, it still managed to sip gas and get nearly 30mpg.
Kensington Motors, LTD of Long Beach, CA sold this Elan when new on December 30th, 1992 to a local Orange County resident. This first owner kept the car until 2005 and used it as a light weekend cruiser. When sold to the current owner, it only had 30,000-miles. For the past 10-years, this owner has primarily used it as a daily driver. This owner is a car enthusiast and understands how to properly maintain his cars. All services since new were either performed at the Lotus dealer or a very well respected independent Lotus service specialists. Highlights of recent services/significant repairs include:
Complete repaint less than 3-years ago (clear coat was peeling)
Timing belt and cam sensor replaced (20k miles ago)
Coolant system service (new expansion tank and hoses – 10k miles ago)
New catalytic converter (less than 2k miles ago)
Rebuilt turbo charger (less than 2k miles ago)
New Interstate battery
Replaced drive shaft boot (10k miles ago)
New front brake rotors and pads
New rear brake pads and new rear wheel bearings
New spark plugs and wires
It is clear that this owner really enjoyed this Lotus and took excellent care of the car. He performed frequent oil services (at least annually) as well.
Considering the age and miles, this Lotus is in very good condition. The paint looks great with minimal signs of use (was repainted less than 3-years ago). There are no signs of accidents or any other damage. The brakes are new all the way around and the rear tires have more than half-life remaining. The front tires are at about 30% life. The soft top was rarely put up as the car was only used during dry driving conditions. The top is in great condition with no tears or rips. The rear plastic window has some discoloration due to age but is still clear. The interior is in pretty good shape but shows wear on the driver seat. The exit bolster is worn down and the bottom of the seat has stitching coming apart as well as the bottom support is collapsed. The rest of the interior looks very nice. The dash is good with no cracks and all the gauges/buttons seem to operate properly. The A/C was never used. It blows, but not cold.
This Elan just passed the strict California smog test and registration is good until January, 2016.
It comes with the original owner’s manual, spare tire, battery tender, extra key, and tools.
