Vehicle Detail

For sale is a 1964 Mercedes Benz 220S true survivor. This car has lived it's entire life here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and for almost all of its life, still tethered to it's original owner and purchaser. This is a true unmolested 1964 original car. Nothing has ever been modified or altered to this vehicle and it has been well maintained as the service books can attest to. I have ALL of the original documentation for this car, dating back to the original delivery on May 1, 1964 from European Motors in San Francisco. The car was serviced FAITHFULLY at the dealer for the first 4 decades of it's life. It went through so many stampings, the dealer had to issue a new book! It is because of this that I know that the true and correct mileage for this car is not the 78,000+ shown on the odometer, but 278,000, which is what is recorded in the dealer issued maintenance booklet. I have a wealth of original documentation: everything form the owners manual and 2 service booklets, to the data card and new car service policy. I have 2 sets of original keys. The car is still wearing it's original paint, which is factory color db-166, grey-blue. The paint looks great from 10 feet, and shines still at close inspection, but there are numerous flaws all over. Mostly tiny knicks, but one noteworthy one is a crease about 4 inches in length in the lower region of the drivers side front fender. The chrome is still shiny and mostly great, sans a dent to the rear right side. No one seems to have the formula anymore for making db 166, so the hub caps were freshly painted using a horizon blue formula. Close, but not an exact match. The whole body of the car however, has never been even touched up. Totally original, as is the interior, which looks good with the exception of the front dash board which has cracks and has altered in form due to the sun damage. The wood also needs to be refinished but it is all there and has no major problems. The white steering wheel is better than most with no major cracks or separation. What few gauges and controls offered in 1964 still work today. Even the clock works, which will lose time if the car is not driven for more than 3 days in a row. Otherwise, it ticks and works fine. The most shocking thing to me was the ever problematic plastic heater control levers that almost always are broken and/or frozen in place. Not this one! They slide to and fro and work as they should. Even the knob for the blower motor lights up green when in use. That neat speedo works great and all gauges seem pretty accurate. If memory serves me correctly, the light that should illuminate when the hand brake is engaged is blown out, but all else work. The foot pedal for the wipers work and both the front interior light and the rear dome light work well. This is a power nothing car, so there isn't too much that can go wrong. It is a 4 speed manual transmission with the shifter on the column (quite fun, I think) and it also has manual steering. The horn has that classic european sound! The engine is very reliable and runs strong. I read once somewhere that the 220S had a "stout 6 cylinder" and this seems to describe it well. It has no trouble accelerating fast to gain speed to enter the motor way. Although this is a radio delete car, I am throwing in a recently restored Becker Grand Prix radio, which is era correct having come out of a1968 280 SL. It is the top of the line model with 4 bands and the wonderbar seeker and it was recently refurbished by Becker. This radio alone is over $700 to replace. I also have a new Hirshmann antenna that will be going with the car. All you need do is install it, if you desire. Almost new (tread wise) older set of Michelin tires. I am holding clear, non salvaged title to this vehicle in the state of California. Overall a fine running, rarely seen today speciman that needs nothing now to be enjoyed and used as is, and is still quite presentable overall. It even has era correct seat belts. Now for the disclaimer: This car is to be sold as is, where is. I, the owner, reserve the right to end the auction early as it will be advertised in other venues for sale simultaneously with this auction. Additionally, I reserve the right to cancel the winning bid should it sell on the final day of the auction, and Ebay refuses to take this one down. Should this occur, an email will be sent immediately to the high bidder to prevent an unwanted payment being made. The car has been described to the best of my abilties as it sits today. Being 51 years old, anything or any number of things can suddenly and/or unexpectedly happen to change today's description. Please prepare yourself for the highs and lows owning a half century old vehicle can bring. Lastly, please ask any and ALL questions PRIOR to submitting your bid. Having said all of that, may the best man or woman win!
