Vehicle Detail
Low Reserve Auction. My Daily Driver. The Basics: A Good condition 1973 VW Westfalia Campmobile for sale. Odometer reads 69, xxx mi, the odometer has probably turned over. Tires are good with plenty of life left. It's a 41 year old, unrestored, vehicle so it will be needing things in the future. The interior is not perfect, and will need things too, but it is also unrestored and mostly original. The carpet was changed out at some point. But the upholstery and curtains and woodwork are okay and original. The motor is strong. The flyscreen for the rear hatch is perfect, as is the front privacy curtain. It's got the standard sink and icebox/cooler, not the propane stove and refrigerator. Lots of cabinets and storage. I love the Campmobile, it's fun, people wave and smile, it's great for actual camping and gets around 23MPG. And it's easy to work on. But I need a pick up, so I can throw tools and metal and wood in the back. Is it ready to drive across country? Maybe. But you might have to do stuff along the way. It's an old car and it make people romantic. But the reality is that it's an old car and stuff wears out. It's been my daily driver for the past year, and I've put 16,000 miles on it and it's never stranded me. that doesn't mean it can't happen, but I put an effort into maintaining it as best I can. It's not a fully restored Westfalia that you drive a million miles without any problems at all. It does need and will need some TLC, until you take it completely apart and rebuild it. It's 41 years old, and pretty original. But because it is mostly original, it is very restorable. Please do some research, check "thesamba.com" classifieds, and you'll see what "fully-restored" will cost you. The Good!: It's a native New Mexican, and is rust free. I've replaced the popup tent, brand new. I've replaced the steering damper, front shocks, speedo cable, starter motor, inition wires, rotor, distributer cap, oil cooler, headlight bezels, transmission oil, and rebuilt the dual Solexs. I've also installed modern retractable Securon seatbelts. It comes with extra valve cover gaskets, oil filters, oil strainer gaskets, points, 2 service manuals, generator belt, clutch cable, misc tools, carb synch tool, a new curtain set, and a box of painting supplies. The engine is strong. The valves are stable, and while I check them every 3,000 miles they rarely need adjusting. It has a Pertronix ignition, so no points to adjust or replace. This Camper isn't perfect, but it has "Good Bones". It's never been horribly molested or modified, it's basically original and is prime for restoration. The Bad: The paint is not completely original. Parts have been resprayed. Not by me but earlier in it's life. At some point the front end/Nose was replaced. There are dents and scratches and one or two small body crumples. It's scruffy, but still okay. The transmission was noisy when I bought it, 15,000 miles ago. The whole time, when it's hot, it takes a push or two to go into second. In the past month or so it's popped out of 2nd gear a few times under neutral throttle. As they say, "it's making it way out" but this could take a while. A top of the line transmission, by Rancho, costs $800. Which is why I've lowered my price. The drivers seat upholstery is terrible, needs replacing. Possibly the rear CV's will want replacing someday. It's also not holding an idle until it's been driven a couple miles. It's fine in the warmer weather. So it might want a professional carb adjustment. Vehicle is listed locally via Craigslist. I reserve the right to end the auction if a local buyer steps up. Thanks for reading. Please ask any questions, I'm upfront and straightforward. On Nov-21-14 at 16:52:11 PST, seller added the following information: Low Reserve Auction. My Daily Driver. The tires: 3 of the 4 are at 80% tread, one, and I don't know why, is at 30%. The body has some dents and scratches, nothing huge and should be visible in the pictures. The turn signals don't shut off automatically. Reverse lights don't work. Vehicle is listed locally via Craigslist. I reserve the right to end the auction if a local buyer steps up.
