Vehicle Detail
This car is 90% original Auburn speedster chassis, drivetrain engine and transmission, grille, nose, hood, original dashboard and dashboard instruments and seats. The rear portion of the body from the cowl back was replaced with a fiberglass reproduction as the original was believed to be in a fire in a warehouse in New Jersey in the early 70's were several priceless other Packard's and Cadillac's were destroyed and this car was saved. The original components of this car where accepted by the Auburn museum as original Auburn parts. Auburn claimed that each of the supercharged Speedsters was road tested at speeds in excess of 100 mph before delivery. A plaque affixed to the dashboard of each car attested to the speed at which it had supposedly been driven, each label bearing the signature of either Wade Morton or "Ab" Jenkins. The truth of the matter appears to be that, although all of the Speedsters were doubtless capable of topping 100 mph, no more than one car in five was actually tested. The third-generation Speedster was carried over unchanged into 1936. It compiled something like 70 speed records over the two-year period of its production, a remarkable performance for a $2,245 automobile. Buehrig estimated that approximately 600 of these formidable machines were built, though Auburn historians now put the number at about 180. On Oct-31-14 at 05:58:59 PDT, seller added the following information: The graceful lines of the Auburn Boat-tail Speedster were designed by Gordon Beuhrig, literally to be a “show stopper”. First introduced in the auto shows during the summer of 1934, the Auburn was an instant success. This exquisite vehicle captured the media's attention and the imagination of history. In all, some 600 units of this exclusive automobile were built. At this time, in the history of the Auburn, they were largely built by hand. Today these vehicles are produced at the Prototype Research & Development factory with the same meticulous attention to detail as at Auburn. The frame is jig welded and all mechanical components are jig installed. This produces a full rolling chassis, which is then mated with a hand laminated, steel reinforced fiberglass body, complete with hand formed 14 gauge aluminum hood panels. The body has 12 coats of rubbed base clear to give a deep enduring finish. Specially selected rich leather touch material and the best of the Hartz convertible topping set off the vehicle interior while chromium plated bronze castings and stainless steel detail pieces complete the exterior. From its inception, this vehicle has served an exclusive clientele. In the thirties it was the darling of the Hollywood set, to such actors as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, and Al Jolson. Traditionally, Auburns were owned by influential members of society such as doctors, business tycoons, and royalty. Today’s reproduction by Prototype Research & Development Ltd. preserves this tradition. On Oct-31-14 at 06:47:21 PDT, seller added the following information:
