Vehicle Detail
My family and I have really enjoyed taking this to mountain bike races and trips to camp and ride, but it's time to let her go for other projects I have in the works. The Good:Engine runs really great! Air cooled engine - $4,000 rebuild project completed two years ago by previous owner. Listen to the engine online. - (shot video 8/30/2014)Van has a good Virginia State Inspection sticker and a clear title No rips, tears or holes in any of the seats or beds.Comes with all of the curtains and the rear bug screenAll original tables are in good working conditionWorking Pop-Top Camper - works better than my 2002 pop-top did!!!The paint is decent for a daily driver (its lost a lot of its shine over the years and is dull with some normal chips and scratches on the rear hatch), but you will want to repaint and replace all the seals if you're planning to restore it. Front seats swivelWorking WindowsWorking Sink and 5 Gallon freshwater tank (has hook up for city water)Working electrical hook up. Plug the van in at campsites and run off site power instead of draining your battery Working propane tank and two-burner stove - we had pancakes on it last weekReplaced with new fuel lines and grommets less than a year agoReplaced with new battery less than a year agoReplaced with new fuel tank cross over pipe less than a year agoReplaced stock bumpers with new Rocky Mounty Westy bumpers with 2" receiver hitch to haul bike rack, etc. (this was an $1,100 upgrade!!!)Replaced with new headlights a year agoReplaced with new rear hatch struts a year agoReplaced with new side view mirrors (both) a year agoReplaced with new pop-top carriage bolts (all) a year agoReplaced with new GoWesty luggage rack seal a year agoReplaced with new passenger side manual window regulator a year agoNew master brake cylinder a little over a year agoNew In-Dash Radio/CD with BlueTooth for hands free cell phone/streaming music/Pandora, etc.14" steel wheels/tires with new hubcaps that actually look decent - tire tread looks good too. Interior carpets look good for a Westy of this ageOil changed every 3 to 4 months No oil leaks on the driveway! Includes a brand new pop-top seal kit from GoWesty (not needed at this time since there are no leaks and the existing one looks good and functions perfect.)The Not So Good:The connecting rod on the driver side between the lower A-arm and the sway bar is broken - (about a $30 part. learn more at http://www.cs.rochester.edu/~jag/vw/body/swaybar.html ) Refrigerator does not work, but the original is there. You might be able to get it workingSliding door does not lock and although it shuts really easily and securely, it can be a bit of a pain to open until you get used to itNot sure how accurate the odometer is. The mileage is showing more miles than when I bought the van and when I look down, it sometimes moves.Very little rust - rocker panel (shown with tape over it - see picture 8) and a small spot around the window (also taped over - see picture 8) All other rust is only surface level and can easily be sanded and painted. The paint is decent for a daily driver (dull with some normal chips and scratches on the rear hatch), but you will want to repaint and replace all the seals for a full on restoration. Dent in the front left of van (see pics)Some dents in the fenders that could be pulled back and reshaped to their original state. It can sometimes be difficult getting this 4 speed manual transmission into 3rd gear - But it does not POP OUT of any gears or anything like that. The van has been our daily driver and no trouble getting us where we need to go. Although the pop-top canvas does not leak at all (nor does the Van), it has one large poor repair patch job on the passenger side of the tent and needs some screen repair. However, the top works and functions fantastic! I had plans to replace the pop-top canvas, but only for cosmetic reasons.Heater blows hot, but appears that previous owner removed the two pipes that direct the heat into the cabin. This removal is very common among VW owners and is an easy fix (parts less than $100). The engine starts VERY EASILY...on the first turn of the key, every time, all year long! The only time I had issues with starting was when the battery died. I replaced the battery less than a year ago. Good luck. Will only sell to buyers in the Continental U.S. This is my bottom line price!
