Vehicle Detail
1960 Mercury Monterey 2 Dr Hardtop Heres a chance to buy a nice original unmolested Monterey that was last registered in 1978 !! Its been parked in the back yard of the original owners since then sitting in the AZ sun and heat for many yrs. PLEASE READ THE WHOLE AD, THERE IS A LOT OF GOOD INFO ABOUT THE CAR AND THINGS WE DID DURING ITS RESURRECTION !! The car is VERY complete and 80% of the parts on the car are original IE: clamps, hoses, belts etc. When we got the car first we cleaned out as much of the packrat nest as we could, put some Marvel Oil down all the cylinders, removed the original carb and soaked it a few days in carb cleaner. After a few days of soaking, we put back on the carb after cleaning it inside and out, installed a new set of Motorcraft copper plugs, Wix fuel filter, and ran the fuel pump line to a small bottle of fresh gas by the battery. We also installed a new ignition switch and key. We added topped off all the fluids, and cranked it over for about 2 minutes first with no fuel to get all the oil thru the engine, then connected the fuel source. After a few cranks and a little gas directly down the carb, viola ! its started and came to life ! First thing we noticed was the water pump wasnt turning, so we cut off the belts for now. So youll at least need to do the water pump. I believe its the original w/p so youll be able to send it out and have it rebuilt to keep things even more original to the car. How many 50+ yr old cars can say they have the original parts like these ? So after restarting the car we filled the cooling system too just to be safe and it idles pretty good for not having a full tune up for so long. Its pretty amazing. Its a little hard to start when its cold, possibly still needs carb adjustments but I was trying to make the car mobile making it easier to ship. Also I know now at least the motor and trans and rest of the drivetrain are in some sort of working order. There is STILL GAS in the tank from 1978 !!! and its probably leaded too and honestly, the little bit we pumped out of it, wasnt near as bad as I expected it to be ! They for sure dont make pump gas like they use to thats for sure. Probably the coolest thing to do with this car would be restore the car to make it a safe reliable daily driver (motor, trans stuff, suspension , brakes and then Interior all first.) and leave the original paint and patina as is and drive it to shows like that !! They are only original once and why ruin it with a shiney new paint job ? Id almost bet you could buff out whats left of the original enamel paint Wet/dry the whole car with some 600 and buff out whats left you may be amazed on how it comes out. I may even try to do something like that tomorrow and if I do, Ill post up some pics of how it comes out. Haha. This way you could drive it in comfort and take it anywhere and not worry about getting a scratch or dent in a parking lot or something. DARE TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT !!! OBVIOUSLY THIS Merc NEEDS A FULL RESTORATION FRONT TO REAR BUT I WILL TRY TO DETAIL OUT SOME INFO THAT CANT BE SEEN IN THE PICS BELOW. OUR 100% feedback speaks for itself and many of our feedback are from about 15 cars we sold just this past year here on EBay. We put more time and effort into our ads making it much easier for the potential buyers to bid with confidence. NOT MANY OF THESE Montereys are around anymore this rust free. YES it has plenty of surface rust, but that comes up with 600 wet/dry in a few hours too. The Trunk area got the worst of it with water (what little there is in Az) getting trapped between the mat and and pan off and on for 30+ yrs. DRIVETRAIN: matching #s all original W code Mercury 383 with factory 2v carb, along with Merc o Matic transmission and hwy geared 9" rearend. Im pretty sure if you get the car on a lift, youll be pulling out whats left of an old pack rats nest. Motor sounds good for sitting so long, transmission shifts okay and weve been driving the car around a big parking lot moving it to work on it in the shop or take it next door to the hi pressure spray car wash. It will obviously still need more restoration. This car originally sold here in Tucson to a Dr and it came well optioned for a 1960. Underdash AC, PS , PB and padded dash. All this said, it obviously makes the restoration easier and cheaper. Tires that are on it are just 205-75-14 rollers, and smaller then whats called for stock, which is why they may not look correct in the pics. INTERIOR: obviously its been in the AZ sun and heat for a loooong time. But it seems to be 90% complete. Floors are in amazing shape. Some of the chrome inside the car ie handles etc did get some pitting. Needs pretty much all new interior, but its very complete. Front windshield badly cracked, but rest of the glass looks okay for its age and all the windows roll up and down okay, yet a little dry. When we got a new ignition switch for the dash, it plugged into the stock harness okay, but the chrome bezel that holds it all into place didnt want to fit back on correctly. I couldnt find one that fit locally and tried 2 or 3 from local vendors. Gave up for now, but it does start the car which was what we needed the most. The chrome bezel will come with the car in the glove box so when you find the correct switch you can put it all back like its suppose to. The chrome on rest of the interior isnt too bad, some pitting around the radio, but around the main cluster its in pretty good shape and cleans up well. Dr side outter mirror is loose. EXTERIOR: body for its age, extremely straight and clean. Although it does have some dents around the car you can see in the pics below. Rockers have some dents, but are solid but both rear 1/4s did get some rust from the inside out again. Dirt etc building up over the years. The stainless trim all around the car is in amazing shape as is the front grill. Bumpers, just okay but acceptable depending on what level you restore it to. They would re-chrome well. Doors all open and close well and hinges are great. TRUNK: very original and could be used as is, or you could restore it and fix the holes. Spare intact but no jack. The rust you can see in the pics is mostly in the low spots from the inside out. SUSPENSION: basically bone stock 85k mile suspension with some old coilover HD rear shocks on the rear. Brakes work but when I tried to bleed the RR, I couldnt get fluid to properly flow from the bleeder. More then likely during the restoration the brakes will be repaired, and It will need new lines and wheel cylinders at very minimum. Im sure the booster and master will need to be redone too. You have to press pretty hard to get the car to stop. PS is cool and seems to function properly...but again all the hoses etc are original the best I can tell. This land yacht is your typical rust free Arizona car but it is a car that needs some rust repair and still better then one sitting near the coast or in the rust belt. Obviously the car is not 100% rust free, but the rust which is on the car is minimal compared to most un restored cars this old Ive been doing some research on these cars for the last few months 15,790 2dr HTs where made and after 55 yrs not many left on the road or off the road for that matter. While trying to see others for sale out there in all my searches, almost all the cars that came up for sale where either 4drs or Convertibles ! If you know these cars youll agree that its been probably many yrs since youve seen one for sale. My guess is, there are more converts and 4drs left out there then 2drs. This are more rare then the Ford Starliner / the sister car to the Monterey Check out ALL the pics below -----> it may take a full minute for them all to load if you have a slow connection, so be patient AND looks for the extra scroll bar on the right side. Az gets maybe 12" a yr of rain and Az very dry climate. more info AFTER the pics etc. There are 100 large pics.
