1974 Alfa Romeo GTV Restored West Coast Car with Working Factory Air Conditioning We have available a solid 1974 Alfa GTV that has undergone a comprehensive restoration. This model Alfa was the best performing car in it’s market segment. How could one go wrong since Alfa offered a race proven twin cam all alloy two litre engine, a five speed gearbox with overdrive on top gear, and a standard equipment limited slip 4.56 differential. To top this off Alfa provided four wheel disc brakes as standard when most all it’s competitors offered none of those performance items even as options. The package combined with Bertone styling made for an attractive sports coupe, which with minor suspension adjustments out performs the best from Germany. The Italians offered performance, lovely alloy castings on drive components and spotty dealership network, while the Germans offered Teutonic reliability with slow refinements of less their less than optimal engineering. Of course the Germans outsold Alfa here in the US. No matter, those BMW 2002 aficionados will have to scour wrecking yards for later model parts to just reach the base factory specs of this this car. Call me anytime on my cell to discuss: 541.543.6791 This Alfa lead a charmed life in sunny, salt free southern California. It has benefited from an owner willing to strip it down to bare metal repair it’s minor floor rust with steel patch panels, then repaint it completely in factory silver color including the engine bay. He then comprehensively rebuilt all its mechanicals. The minor changes he made were limited to fitting twin Webers with European airbox in place of the Spica fuel injection, mild cam upgrade, and Koni shocks fitted along with spring and sway bar upgrades. These modifications make the car handle firmly but not harshly. This Alfa GTV was featured in a blog and a magazine before the current owner acquired it documents it’s rebuild. I can supply links to those if you contact me through my e-mail (bob at sportscarshop dot com). The current owner has garaged, maintained and improved the car over the last seven years. He polished and refitted the stock bumpers and installed the factory A/C system with a sorted and updated the A/C compressor so that it now has rare working cold air conditioning for those hot days. This exceptionally rare option is a great bonus if you live in the south or humid areas. This car is very enjoyable to drive short or long distance, whether highway or better yet twisty back roads. Paint and Body Body is very solid, with no major accident or rust history. Panel gaps are equivalent to factory. Factory spot welds in most locations. Paint is very nice base coat clear coat silver metallic including jambs and entire engine bay. Not perfect concours level as it is applied with some slight variations in the metal flake that are apparent in some lighting conditions. I would judge it an eight and very good driver quality level. It has proper gloss and only a few minor rock chips from driving. There is a small dent in lower front valance that is not very visible as it is far under bumper. Floors have had minor repairs in low spots done with metal and welded in. Not perfect fit and finish but structurally solid. The very rust prone spare wheel well is still solid. The car had no serious rust anywhere as it was from Southern California. Interior: The head liner is new, proper pattern white vinyl and gives the car an airy clean feel. The rest of the interior is combination of original and redone black vinyl. All is solid and respectable, but is not concours level. The car has the rare wood steering wheel and all other wood veneer pieces have been replaced with well finished parts. The interior is clean, very serviceable as is, but new panels and seats could bring the car to a higher level. Glass and Chrome, Wheels and Tires Glass is good with nice windscreen, all new rubber seals. The rear glass does have some scratches on outside from storage when out. They may buff out, but we did not attempt. Chrome and stainless trim is all nice. New grill is fitted, and the bumpers are very nice. The wheels are 14 inch later Alfa Chromodora star pattern production wheels. We can include the original Turbina wheels if the transporter will pick them up with the car. Driving Impressions The car starts and runs smoothly, and has a free revving, smoke-free, powerful engine. The gearbox shifts well, and the suspension and steering are tight and responsive. Cruises effortlessly and smoothly at 70 mph and is will to go much faster. The brakes haul the car down well from any speed, and benefit from just rebuilt front calipers and new pads. The exhaust has new stock front headpipes and muffler so it is quiet as the factory intended. The car sounds great and is a pleasure to drive while giving the best of Italian motoring. Summation Very solid, hard to find last year Alfa GTV that has had good care and is an excellent driver. It has had a lot of care lavished on it by the last two owners. A major extra benefit is the working factory air conditioning. Very few cars were fitted with this option and it also provides the added option of enhancing the defrosting in winter. The A/C alone should add thousands to the value of the car if you are going to do events with your wife. It is getting hard to find any GTV that is this nice with no major accidents and ready to drive. If you have been looking for one of these wonderful GT cars act fast.
