Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a 1968 Honda CM91 Rally. The CM91 had only one real problem as the 1970's approached: Americans weren't buying them. With bikes like the groundbreaking CB750 on the way, interest in small-displacement "scooters" was waning. Thus began Honda's brief experiment with the "Honda Custom Group". The idea was simple: boost sales by supplying sets of parts that would change the entire look and feel of the CM91. The Rally was one of four kits that Honda designed to in enhance waning sales in the late 60's. There was the "Roadster", the "Boss", the "Student", and the "Rally". But the hot set-up for the wannabe café racer was the sleek "Rally" conversion kit complete with a steering neck, handle bars, triple clamps, seat, tank, front fender, side covers, headlight nacelle, speedometer, wires, and all mounting hardware. All for an extra $50.00 The kits did nothing for the performance or handling. It was purely cosmetic. Ultimately these kits weren't enough to stop the waning sales so they were discontinued in 1969, leaving the now-rare kitted bikes to be rediscovered among the collectors. There was a bike just like this one (but a 1969) in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum at one time. This bike is worthy of a full restoration and will only go up in value.
