Vehicle Detail
(Please read note about indicated mileage below.) This auction is for my 1984 Ford Ranger Diesel pickup truck. This truck has tons of character and charm and has been our family's pet for quite awhile. It offers all the practicality of most small pickup trucks, but with the durability and torque that only a small diesel can offer. It gets terrific fuel mileage (35-40 mpg in town on an accurately calibrated speedometer) and has a very respectable load capacity for a small truck. This truck is in no way a strip it for parts clunker. Opening bid is low to get bidding started, but there is no reserve. General condition- As far as rust: Pickup bed is in good condition with liner. Tailgate has some rust on the lower drivers side outer shell (not too bad to repair), rear step bumper solid. Cab has floor rust which has been temporarily patched but should be repaired permanently. Frame has rust damage by left rear shock mount, but it is very repairable, still maintains rigidity and is driveable as-is. Cab corners in good condition, drivers side cab corner deformed from a side swipe accident many years ago. Doors open and close, no damage to frame from accident. Paint job is, to say the least, entertaining. It is protecting the body from rusting of course but adds lots of character. All glass is intact, both windows open and close. Drivers side window needs new felt in channel (rattles). Body generally has the usual dinks/dents/indignities a well broken in truck is required to have. The truck does have 331,000 miles on it, but we have maintained the drivetrain meticulously and it starts great, runs great, and drives great. The rear axle got new axle bearings, seals, brakes, and brake cables about 20,000 easy miles ago. The full clutch system was replaced about 15,000 miles ago (HD Borg Warner Clutch, slave, master, etc.). The front springs, all shocks, and front crossmember were replaced about three years ago. Also replaced or upgraded in the past 5 years: Fully rebuilt radiator, Front brake pads/rotors/bearings/seals/hoses, Tires and steel wheels/hubcaps (P235/75x15 rears, P225/75x15 fronts), under-chassis lift pump and Racor primary fuel filter/water separator, rebuilt alternator to 100 amp capacity, fresh pair of Interstate batteries, brand new NOS starter. We also have been meticulous about the oil and filter changes, grease jobs, and other routine maintenance items. As you can see, we did not shy away from any and all repairs that kept this truck in excellent running condition. Air conditioning compressor was removed when it stopped working, but all parts to reinstall come with truck if you want them. I also have a full set of the correct Ford Shop manuals in original plastic binders and some owners/operators manuals that go with truck. We have been maintaining this truck as if it will be in the family forever. Unfortunately, our kids are grown and gone, I'm getting old, and it's time to down size. I am being as honest as I can possibly be with the description of this truck and it's condition. It is no speed demon. The engine is factory rated at 59 (blazing) horsepower and 90 ft. lb. of torque. Engine is fully counterbalanced internally. The 3:73 gears let it go down the road comfortably in high gear (4th) at only 20 mph under light load. At 65 mph truck is noisy. Top speed flat out on level ground is around 81 mph with no wind. Speedometer was a full 10% optimistic as delivered new (60 mph actually read 66 mph on speedo) and upsizing the tires turned that around so speedometer is currently 10% pessimistic. (60 mph/miles on speedo/odometer is actually 66). The big tires helped the mpg but did not slow the truck down. All that said, because of diesel drivetrain truck does not bog down with added load. Two 55 gallon drums of B100 biodiesel strapped in the back made it ride better but really did not slow it down much. Appropriately sized loads of firewood or building materials, no problem. Truck is currently driven, registered, and insured in New Jersey. Because it is an older normally aspirated diesel it is exempt from State Inspection in many states and is also exempt from the smoke standards by Federal Law. Yes, like any respectable non-turbo diesel it smokes black under heavy load. I had used bio-diesel in it for a few years. I had to blend my own because New Jersey will not allow retailers to sell bio-diesel. I have run as high as 50% soybean oil in this truck in warm weather (slight loss in power at that blend). Please email me if you have any questions. Vehicle is available for inspection during auction upon request. (Northern New Jersey) Buyer must pickup vehicle within one week of close of sale. Transportation of vehicle must be arranged by winning bidder. I would not hesitate to drive it wherever it has to go from here, but long trips are tedious without cruise control.
