Vehicle Detail
For sale is a rare and running Plymouth Cricket base model with 54k miles, converted to manual transmission in 2006. The Cricket is a rear-wheel drive British import known there as the Hillman Avenger. It was manufactured by the Rootes Group under Chrysler UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillman_AvengerRecently replaced parts include a new alternator, fuel pump, new old stock starter, fan belt, hood latch cable, stabilizer bar bushings, thermostat housing and thermostat. The body is in good condition, some areas (small area of the floor pans) were cut, patched, treated for rust and could use additional work. Please refer to the pictures for the condition of the car. The battery is 2 years old. The clutch has under 2,000 miles on it. This could be a daily driver. This is a reluctant sale, as I make room for a family car. I'm a member of the Hillman Avenger Sunbeam Owner's Club. I have driven this Cricket for over 10 years, and have put 7,700 miles on it. It was purchased from a fellow Hillman enthusiast. Parts are readily available on line and through the owner's club. The car will come with a clear New York State Title, the owner's manual, a workshop manual, a maintenance log, a trophy (won at a british car show) and a tune up kit (dist cap, rotor, condenser, points).Buyer assumes shipping costs. The high bidder must send a $500 deposit, with Paypal, within 24 hours of end of listing and the balance of the sale price must be paid in the form of a bank cashier's check, sent to me, by US Express mail, 2 day delivery. No exceptions. Serious bidders only. ****Here a running list of questions from eBay users and my answers that may help..for your reference I've also pasted my MAINTANACE LOG (mentioned in the description) below:10/18/13Dear watchers: I have lowered the reserve. Thanks for checking this out. Happy Bidding!10/18/13Q. Do you have pictures of the interior and rear of the car? Are the tail lights the same as my old 71 Cricket?A.You may need to scroll down through the pictures to see the interior of the car, the headliner is in great shape. There are 24 pictures listed. The tail lights are the same on the 71-73 Crickets. 10/20/13Q.The car has been converted to a manual transmission. Why?A. The Borg Warner 35 was lurching into 1st gear, and (while I'm not a boy racer) I prefer manual transmission, especially with a light car like the Cricket. A club member offered me a good transmission from Ireland with 60k miles, it was inspected and serviced there, so I purchased it. Q.Why did you go with the 4-spd opposed to a more modern 5or6-sp(more modern & with an overdrive)?A. Initially I wanted a ford sierra 5 speed conversion, but that would have costed more and I would have had to modify the transmission tunnel. The manual gearbox is from an Avenger in Ireland, so the conversion was pretty straight forward. Also, I didn't plan to take it on the freeway all that much, just around the town drives. Q.Do you have the original radio which was put in it at the factory? A. I might, but I don't think it works. Actually, the radio in this one just stopped working, it has a CD player and speakers in the doors in addition to the one on top of the dash, it may just be a fuse. Q. Are you able indicate the condition of the emergency brake?A. Works fine. I've lubricated the cable, and I use it whenever I park to keep it operating and in adjustment. Q.And how about the rack & pinion steering-how would you rate it?A. The rack works fine, it's given me no problems. Q. And what about the heater core;Is it present & is it serviceable? A. The heater works Q. How's the engine?A. The engine starts up consistently and runs without stalling. It's capable of being driven on the highway at 65 mph, but I prefer cruising at 40-50mph. It does not blow any smoke. It does leak a small amount of oil, but I don't have to top it off too often. It's a very slow leak, and I'm assuming it's normal with any older car. I have not changed the head gasket on the car, but if I were to keep it another year I probably would do it since it's been a while. Q. How's the cooling system?A. It's working and does not leak coolant, Some of the hoses were recently replaced. I should mention that the previous owner added an extra radiator which I disconnected, but it can be hooked up if the owner wants to. It's still attached to the original radiator. Q. How's the exhaust?A. The entire exhaust system and exhaust manifold gasket were replaced in 2007. It is quiet and has no leaks. 10/21/13Q. Are there any dings or dents?A. There is a small ding on the rear quarterpanel by the wheel arch, it's not bad, but it's there. 10/22/13Q. How does the car handle?A. It handles and corners well. It makes no weird squeaks or sounds, I replaced the stabilizer bushings and that helped. The shocks and struts do their job with no bouncing or roll. So it grips fine and keeps up with modern day traffic (as long as they aren't racing) . I should mention that because I intended to keep this car forever (I currently have 2 of these rare cars) I made it as safe and driveable as possible. *******MAINTENANCE LOG************** 1973 Yellow Cricket Maintenance Log 2003 Mileage: 46,300 Replaced Carburetor (nos) Installed manual Choke Replaced Fuel Pump Set Timing Replaced Fan Belt Replaced Spark Plugs Changed Engine Oil/Coolant Replaced wheel bearings (nos) Replaced Tie Rods 2004 Replaced Head Lights Replaced Carb diaphragm (nos) Replaced rotor (nos) Replaced contacts Installed K&N air filter (new) 2005 Installed Manual Transmission (inspected used 60k miles) Installed drive shaft (used) and Universal Joint (new) Installed Clutch (nos) Installed Universal Joints (nos) Replaced Spark Plugs Replaced Ignition Wires Changed Engine Oil/Coolant Inspected Chassis used Kurust on floor Pan, jacking point and sill.
