Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE After thirty years of storage, this Montana 1968 Chrysler 300 4-door hardtop has once again seen the light of day! For years my dad was a car guy, especially partial to big Chryslers. He bought this clean 1968 Chrysler 300 from a local gentleman (vehicle was purchased new in May 1968 in Montana). One day a hood torsion spring broke, the hood came down and dented the cowl (it’s still dented on either side) so Dad backed it in the shop to work on it some day; that was in 1983. We watched the 300 sit in the shop forever, thinking some day he would get after it, but that never happened and the car was forgotten as stuff piled up around it. Finally, his better half enlisted her boys to see if they could get it running and sell it...the challenge was on!! After a day of clearing all the junk away, it was towed out into the sunshine for the first time in a very long time. The Chrysler was loaded on to a trailer, and I drove off with $20 in quarters for the car wash, not sure of what appear. With most of the dust and grime washed off, I set out to see what we had. Happily, the mice had not invaded the interior and the exterior looked very nice. I found the build sheet, the owner’s manual, warranty protect-o-plate, fender skirts, and all the bits which had been moved around over the years. It appears there was a passenger side rear quarter panel repair/replace years ago...it is not noticeable from the outside. I drained the oil & filled with new, flushed the carb, flushed the fuel tank and fuel lines, added fresh gas, new air and fuel filters, flushed cooling system, charged the battery, and crossed my fingers. I pulled the coil wire off to turn the engine over and build some oil pressure. Everything seemed fine, so I replaced the coil wire, primed the carb, and, well, after a few tries, it started...surprised the heck out of me. The exhaust smoked for a bit but cleared up and the mighty 350 hp, 440 cubic inch Chrysler engine runs quite well. More surprises: nearly everything works...the headlight doors, lights, electric seat, power brakes, vacuum operated trunk release, signals, interior lamps and gauges, wipers and more. Further testing the gods of automotive storage, we took it for a drive and the 45 year old car shifted, steered, and braked as it should. Thirty years of dry Montana storage had preserved the car remarkably well. I put the only 14 inch tires on it I could find just to get the 300 on the trailer and then roll it around. You should thoroughly check out the brakes and important parts before driving off down the interstate at 75 mph. I’ve tried (other than removing the inches of dust) to leave the vehicle as it was when I pulled it out of the shop, so you can do your own assessment and not have to wonder what is buried. I am resisting the urge to polish it and start repairing every little thing. I recently found and purchased hood torsion rods so the hood could be re-installed and adjusted to properly open & latch. I am pleased with what a solid, original, good looking piece of American automotive history this 1968 Chrysler 300 is...good luck! The car will be sold through eBay, however, I reserve the right to end the auction early if the car sells locally. 1968 Chrysler notes: - no warranty expressed or implied - $500 deposit due within 48 hours of winning bid - balance due within 5 days of winning - buyer responsible for transport from 59425 - car includes spare parts including spare rear axle, brake drums, etc. - MANY more photos available on line - send message for details or call 406-576-7140 • Stock 440 ci, 4 barrel, V-8 engine, 350 hp • 727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission • Power Steering • Power Brakes • Power bucket drivers seat • Remote controlled outside mirror • Power trunk lid release • Power antenna (not functioning) • Tilt AND Telescoping steering wheel • Cruise control • Interior lamp convenience group • Luxury drawer lighter & ashtrays • Rear seat lighter • Front and rear lap belts • Original AM 8-Track Radio • Factory Air Conditioning • Sovereign Gold Metallic exterior, parchment white vinyl interior • White padded vinyl top
