Vehicle Detail

This car is an original numbers matching 1st generation (SWB) 1968 911L Sportomatic. The Certificate of Authenticity verifies the serial numbers and original options of Sportomatic Transmission and tinted window glass. The car runs and drives great and has been my Sunday drive car for many years. There is very little rust on the car and no serious or structural affecting rust. My Family is the second owner of this car. It was originally purchased from Tropical Motors in Melbourne, FL on 9/18/1968. The original owner had the car until 1976 at which time he traded the car in. My cousin bought the car from a Dealer in Tampa, FL in 1976. In 1979 my father bought the car and owned it until 1996 which is when I bought the car. I have owned the car ever since. The car is completely original except for the following items: The smog pump was removed sometime prior to my family owning the car. The car had dealer installed A/C, and that was removed sometime in the 1980s. The original ignition switch failed and was replaced with a non-Porsche switch. We still have the original switch. The tires are a “plus 1” size (195/60 HR15) because they ride much nicer than the original 185/70 VR15 Tires. The windshield washer pump is missing. Also I believe that the car originally had Fuchs alloys, but I am not positive. It has had the chrome rims for as long as we have owned it. In 1987 the car was taken to Stoddard Porsche in Cleveland to have the body repainted and rust repaired. Stoddard replaced both doors and repaired both rocker and quarter panels. They then repainted the car and replaced all rubber and aluminum trim at that time. The car was repainted in Alpine White. The original color of the car was 6804-Light Ivory. Since then, the car has been garaged and never driven in the rain. The car is almost completely rust free. The passenger front fender has a few rust spots around the antenna mount. The floor pan near the driver's side rear seat has a few small rust spots. Both are documented in the additional online photos (link below). There are also a few spots of rust in the front truck near the heater box (not by the battery or front suspension). The wheels have lost their chrome around the edge of the rims. As stated above, the engine and transmission are original. It has the original 40 IDA Weber carbs which were rebuilt at 120,000 miles by a Porsche dealer in the Chicago area. At 115,000 miles the engine was rebuilt. Timing chains, tensioners, crankshaft and oil pump were all replaced in addition to the usual parts such as piston rings, bearings, valve guides, etc. The engine was recently tuned up with valve and ignition timing adjusted, valve clearance adjusted, carbs adjusted, and new plugs. It runs very well to red-line and idles smoothly. The heat exchangers and muffler are the originals and need to be replaced. There are holes in both of the heat exchangers and the muffler. There are a few oil leaks, one by the oil strainer cover, one at the sportomatic oil pump (not the engine oil pump), and one at the oil tank. I believe the oil tank drip is coming from the oil filter mount or oil sender mount gasket. It should be easy to fix. When the engine was rebuilt, the torque converter, clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing were replaced. A few years ago all the Sportomatic related oil seals were replaced. The transmission input shaft seal, free wheel ball bearing and seal, torque converter seal and all copper and aluminum sealing washers replaced. The transmission itself has never been rebuilt, but shifts up and down very well in all gears. Second gear will grind a little if shifted into that gear too quickly. The chassis and suspension are all original except stainless steel flexible brake lines which replaced the original rubber lines. The original front and rear sway bars are still intact and the car has the original equipment Koni Shocks and vented front and rear disc brakes. The suspension is basically a 911S suspension. The interior of the car is all original. There is a crack in the dash common among these cars. The carpet by the driver’s door is frayed, there is a small tear in the headliner at the back of the car, and there is wear hole in the driver’s seat back. The map pockets elastic is worn out. The car has the original owner’s manual, but it is not in very good shape. The jack is in the car, but the toolkit is missing. Everything in the interior works except for the radio. The original Becker radio is in the car, but doesn't power on, I believe only the power switch is broken. The radio worked fine prior to the switch breaking. All instruments work fine. The three speed fan works, but heater hoses are disconnected from the heat exchangers due to the poor state of the heat exchangers. The car still has it's very rare and original hella fog lights, although I believe both bulbs are burned out.
