Vehicle Detail
Here we have a 1982 Suzuki DR500 in very good condition. Bike is bone stock. There is no speedometer, so the milage is unknown... the rear tire looks brand new, so my guess is that this bike has had enough use to wear out the back tire....must have been replaced right before bike went into storage. This DR500 has not been abused, but it did sit (inside) for a number of years. The bike belonged to an elderly man who used it to buzz around on his farm until he just got too old...so it sat in storage for several years. I have the title but never registered the bike in my name. This motorcycle is physically too big for me (I'm 5' 7"), and it easily has the most compression of any bike I've ever owned. What a beast...I can literally stand on the kickstart lever and it doesn't move under my weight when at TDC compression stroke....yes I know it has a compression release lever, and it works perfectly. The bike has incredible torque...very fun to ride, and it's easy to understand why so many people love these things... very desirable in vintage racing circles. I bought the bike, cleaned it up, got it running well, rode it around for a while, parked it in my garage where it sat (with gas still in the tank.....oops) since summer of 2010. Last month, I somewhat hastily cleaned out the carburetor and my DR500 started right up....it runs well at low rpm, but would benefit from a full tune-up. It acts like it may still have an obstruction in one of the carburetor jets.... when you run up the rpm it balks at a certain level. The bike sat for years and has the usual issues from a long period of neglect. Other things that are wrong with the bike: there are minor scratches here and there (no evidence of a hard crash), the end of the clutch lever is broken off (still works fine), there are 3 small holes in the seat cover (see pics) plus a few fabric tears on the right rear corner of the seat (also pictured), the kickstand has been repaired....welded a few inches from the bottom, not sure, but it looks like the muffler was modified ?....looks like a piece of pipe was welded to the end of the muffler???, it's missing the right side cover (I'm told that it's still available...Bike Bandit???), I do have the left side cover and it looks great except for a hairline crack on the top of the cover, I have the chain guide rollers but their rubber "wheels" need to be replaced....the sprockets don't look bad, but I'd replace the chain...I don't trust used chains. The gas cap (plastic?) has been repaired...seems to work fine. Overall, the bike is very nice...needs a little tlc, but a very worthwhile vintage thumper. Dual sport kits are available for the DR500....about $350 or so. I thought about keeping the DR but recently bought a dual-sport Honda that better suits my needs. In the interest of full disclosure I have tried to list all of the problems with my Suzuki....if I notice anything else I will amend the listing. Shipping is up to the buyer, but I will help with the process. Low starting bid, no reserve. Please email any questions. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
