’71 Corvette Stingray Coupe VETTE Magazine Project C3 Triple-Ex Reserve is less than the price of the parts used to build this stunning Stingray Buy now and save money, next time you see it will be at Barrett Jackson or Mecum This is a highly modified, updated, and modernized magazine technical project car, and a copy of each magazine issue is included in the sale. This car was built by contributing VETTE Magazine Technical Editor Dave Young and the build was featured in multiple issues of VETTE Magazine. The best of the best parts and techniques were used in this build. This 1971 Corvette Stingray Coupe was originally Brandshatch green with green interior, and came with the standard 350 cubic inch small-block and Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed manual transmission. When we obtained the car in 2008 the original engine was long gone, replaced by a later model 350 and the front clip had been changed to an aftermarket unit with hidden headlights (in the grilles) and L-88 style cowl hood. As a VETTE Magazine project car, this Stingray has been highly modified into a fast, fun, ‘Vetterod, This car is not for the tame at heart, with a 615 horsepower all-aluminum 427 cubic inch small-block, Tremec 5-speed transmission, and multiple suspension, body, and interior upgrades. The modifications and upgrades are outlined below. Body: This car was refinished in late 2009, painted in stunning 2009 Corvette Cyber Gray with a subtle, Baldwin Motion inspired stripe in black. Multiple coats of base and eight coats of clearcoat were applied for a show-quality finish. All high-quality BASF Diamont products were used during the paint job, including special Diamont primer. Car was painted by JD’s Paint and Body shop in central Florida. Newly re-chromed rear bumpers, new door handles, mirrors, antenna, license plate housing, exhaust cutout trim, and emblems from Corvette Central. New windshield was installed at same time the car was painted, but has one tiny chip from same rock that chipped front end paint (in photo). This imperfection could be easily filled by a glass guy. Wheels are 17 inch ZR-1 inspired from SLP with Nitto Invo tires. L-88 style aftermarket bulge hood with new 427 emblems. Paint is extremely nice, with the only flaws being two small rock chips on front bumper (happened while driving on street). Engine: The “LS-7 Killer” powerplant was introduced in VETTE Magazine and has been copied by other automotive magazines including Popular Hot Rodding and Car Craft. This combination is now offered by Dart and is an all-aluminum, pump gas, 600 plus horsepower, 427 cubic inch first generation Chevrolet small-block featuring a Dart aluminum block with raised camshaft, 50mm roller cam bearings, and wide “Rocket” oil pan rail. This engine is built with the highest quality forged internals from Scat (lightweight crank and rods), Mahle (forged lightweight pistons), Jesel (complete shaft mount rocker system), and Comp (custom solid roller camshaft, lifters, springs), and is topped with Dart Pro 1 CNC ported cylinder heads, a Dart single-plane aluminum intake, and QuickFuel 950 cfm carburetor. The oil system is a Stef’s fabricated aluminum wet sump pan, pickup, and oil pump with remote oil filter. Hooker Super Competition headers dump into 2 ½ inch exhaust and two-chamber Flowmasters. The complete MSD ignition includes a Pro-Billet distributor with mechanical tach drive (compatible with factory Corvette tachometer), 6AL2 ignition box with two-step rev limiter, MSD HVAC coil and MSD plug wires. Water pump is engine driven high-volume aluminum with aluminum radiator and dual thermostat controlled electric fans with shroud. Pulleys are March Performance billet aluminum. All paperwork and dyno sheets are included and the engine was featured in a series of VETTE Magazine technical articles. Drive Train: Tremec TKO 500 five-speed overdrive transmission was installed using a kit from American Powertrain, also covered in a VETTE Magazine article. The car has a Centerforce dual-friction DFX clutch, new Centerforce SFI flywheel, and pressure plate. The shifter is stock appearing and remains in the stock location. New driveshaft with new heavy-duty U-joints was included with transmission kit. Factory rear 3.55 posi differential was fully serviced and all new HD universal joints in axle shafts. Gearing and overdrive make this a great accelerating car with awesome top end potential. If you have the b_ _ ls to go fast, this car will take you there. Front Suspension: Front suspension has been converted to adjustable Coilovers with Speed Direct’s Shark Bite front suspension. All front suspension bushings have been replaced and the upper control arms have been replaced with aluminum units from Speed Direct featuring race ball-joints and a spreader bar. The steering has been converted to power rack and pinion using the Steeroids kit with factory steering pump. Front brakes are new Stainless Steel Brakes with four-piston calipers and drilled and slotted rotors with billet aluminum Comp Cams vacuum canister. SSBC billet aluminum master cylinder and braided stainless steel lines to replace the rubber lines. Rear Suspension: The mono-leaf has been removed and replaced by Speed Direct “Shark Bite” rear adjustable Coilover kit. This modification provides full adjustability without the side to side energy transfer of the factory mono-leaf setup. Coil springs are easily changed and currently the springs are aggressive rate. Rear brakes are Stainless Steel Brakes with four-piston calipers, braided stainless lines, and drilled and slotted rotors. All bearings, bushings, strut-rods are new. Front and rear have been aligned per race specs for the aggressive suspension components. Car is lowered approximately two inches from stock ride height. Wheels and Tires: Wheels are 17 inch aluminum lightweight SLP ZR-1 style, painted Matte silver. Tires are Nitto Invo soft-compound tires with aggressive tread. This car sticks to the road and is set up for drag, road-course, or auto-cross. Drives great on the street as well and handles wet roads fairly well also. Fuel System: New factory style aluminum fuel tank fills from the stock location. Holley electric fuel pump and new aluminum line installed from front to rear with braided line at the junctions. Holley regulator in engine bay. Quick Fuel Q-series 950 cfm four-barrel is dyno tuned to the engine. Interior: Interior features factory tilt/telescoping wheel and has been fully refurbished with new door panels, interior panels, carpet, and console from Corvette Central. All new T-top hardware and headliner pads. New sun visors and all windshield interior trim. All new door seals, window seals, and cat-whiskers. Corbeau A4 leather bucket seats featuring Speed Direct adjustable seat tracks, inflatable lumbar support, and Corbeau retractable and lockable four-point harnesses. Seats are installed with a kit from Speed Direct so they are in the factory location. Dash has been modified with all new Autometer silver-faced instruments in the factory locations and MSD programmable shift-lite on steering column. Alpine AM/FM/CD/MP3 with new kick panel speakers and rear speakers. Ignition and door locks have been keyed the same. Extras: A Classic Auto Air aftermarket air-conditioning system was not installed and is included with this car. Also, many of the factory interior panels, instrumentation, heater/ac controls, etc. are included. The factory front suspension parts that were removed are available as well if you come pick them up or pay to have them shipped. Overall: This is a highly modified, attractive, well-built Stingray. The build features top-quality parts and has been documented in the pages of VETTE Magazine. This is not a frame-off restoration but rather a purpose-built badass Vetterod. Be warned that this is an extremely powerful, lightweight car with the potential for incredible acceleration and top-speed. This Stingray also handles and brakes extremely well. This Corvette should not be considered a daily driver or docile cruiser, but if you want to make an impression at the local car show, cruise night, drag strip, road course, or autocross then bid with confidence. Without traction control or ABS this car should be handled with care by all but the most experienced driver. Less than 1000 miles have accumulated on this car since it was built. Don’t expect complete perfection but do expect to be impressed with the turn-key performance of this ’71 Corvette coupe. Please call or email with any questions, check out the articles in VETTE Magazine and on Vetteweb.com, and I would encourage you to come see the car in person prior to bidding. Transportation is at your expense from the car’s location in Lakeland, Florida, and based on the high-performance of this vehicle I wouldn’t recommend driving it cross-country. The car is for sale locally so I reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time. I hate to get rid of this Stingray as it is fun to drive and a real head-turner, but too many other car projects, a drag racing hobby, and aircraft interests just prevent me from using it like I should. Feel free to call with any questions or to schedule an appointment to see the car, or ask any questions through ebay and I will answer quickly. I have tried to describe and show the car best as possible through text and photos, but encourage you to look at it in person before bidding. Reserve is set at a reasonable price given the level of performance and investment in building this vehicle. Happy Bidding! A deposit of $1000 is required within 48 business hours of auction end by wire transfer, bank check, or cash in person. Final payment is due within 7 days by wire transfer, bank check, or cash in person. All funds must clear prior to car being shipped or picked up. I will assist with loading/shipping car on my end, but car must be picked up at my location. Call Dave with any questions at: 863/990-2486
