Vehicle Detail

This 1957 Mercedes 220S is one beautiful, unique automobile! James Bond buffs may recall this car being in the 1964 hit “Goldfinger.” In mint condition, this car has been babied for many years. I have been the owner of the vehicle for the past 9 years. Records of this car are available from 1985-present. When I purchased it in 2004, I did a complete frame-on restoration that included the following (I will be as thorough as possible): EXTERIOR -The car was completely repainted (sanded down to the metal) to the original color—metallic grey. To this day the car is without a scratch or ding. It has always been garage kept with a custom-fitted cover. The paint is nearly flawless. -All new chrome bumpers, bumper guards, handles, emblems, and window frames (some of these pieces were professionally refurbished by a chrome company, while some were bought new directly from Germany). The grill is all-original and in mint condition. Mercedes chrome is second to none! -New rubber seals were installed (around the windshield, windows, grill, front/rear lights, and front/rear bumper guards). -Brand new hubcaps (directly from Germany) were installed. INTERIOR -The beautiful red leather seats looks brand new. When I bought the car I re-dyed them as they had faded over time. The owner before me had installed new seats years before. So essentially, they just needed a “touch up.” There are no scratches, tears, and little signs of wear on them. -The interior is also equipped new carpeting and door panels (matched to original colors, specifications, etc.). The headliner was replaced in the late 80s and is still in perfect condition. -The wood panels on the doors are in good shape. They were refurbished by a local wood-worker when I first bought the car. Due to the age of the wood (all the wood is original!), there are some cracks that aren’t that noticeable. The dashboard is in good shape. It may be the only piece on the vehicle that falls short of “mint condition.” -The steering wheel and most interior chrome components are original and in good shape. I did replace the radio to the original Blaupunkt radio (purchased from Germany, as well). With it, I installed a hidden digital radio override that works perfect and produces clear sound. -The glass is all original and looks brand new. Mercedes spared no expense with this. -It should also be noted the car does not come with heating or AC. MECHANICS The car runs extremely well. It is a 4 speed on the column and shifts like butter. I run the vehicle often, as well as change all the fluids and do proper maintenance when needed. All mechanical work has been done by the most prestigious of professionals. Here’s a more thorough list of things: -The engine is sound and solid. Aside from the diesels, this is one of the best engines Mercedes has ever produced. I’ve researched and found many documented engines that have gone a million miles plus! As I said above, I change the oil often. It should be noted that it occasionally leaks coolant. The mechanic said it just needs a seal, but if kept an eye on the level, it would be fine. This has never caused me any trouble whatsoever. -The carburetors were rebuilt by a Mercedes Ponton specialist about 3 years ago. They work well, but occasionally need adjusting. -The transmission is extremely smooth and shifts well. There are no known problems with it. -The clutch was replaced when I first bought the car, too. Since then it’s worked extremely well. -I had new brakes lines/hoses installed when I bought the vehicle. The brakes work very well. -The battery was replaced about 10 months ago. -The car does not have power steering. -Windshield wipers work well and have been recently replaced. -The exhaust is good and keeps the car quiet. -The tires are essentially brand new, as they have seen less than 200 miles on them. All in all, this is a very simple car with few parts prone to failure. Even the least experienced mechanic can figure this car out. I’ve been heavily encouraged to put this car in shows because—as I’ve been told—it’s bound to win awards. It’s in great shape. I’ve invested over $24,000 into the car. It will not disappoint you. Honesty is my policy. I’ve tried to be up front about everything on the car. But if you should have additional questions, email me at j.garcia@ccuniversity.edu. I hesitate getting rid of it, but due to the fact that I have 1972 280SEL on the way and my wife is expecting again, it’s a must. I’ll try to be as flexible and accommodating to the buyer as possible. Know I’m not desperate to sell as I do have a price in mind of what I’d like to get for it. I certainly can help arrange shipping. I have the right to end the auction whenever as this car is for sale in other places too. Thanks. My feedback speaks for itself!
