Vehicle Detail

I'm selling my classic "survivor" 1972 Datsun 240Z with a rare white interior and its complete matching number drivetrain (number stamped on the engine block, L24-93091, matches the number stamped on the metal plate in the engine compartment). It has 97k original miles and all of its original documentation (the bill-of-sale from 8/5/72, 1972 240Z owner's manual, 1972 warranty and service book that has all the original owner's info on the first page and documents every oil change up to 60k miles that were all done at Datsun dealers, the plastic warranty card, the first Calif. smog cert, the first Calif. registration, two photos of the car taken when it was new (see the last 2 photos in the gallery), the Hitachi radio instructions and Consumer guide, dealer key fob from the orig selling dealer, and the blue plastic pouch with the Datsun logo that held the orig. documents...one photo shows the documents, but not the dealer key fob). I guarantee you won't find a 240Z with better documentation! This car was built in Mar. 72 and sold to an Air Force officer stationed at Travis AFB near Sacramento. The dealership installed over $800 worth of options (incl air conditioning...it didn't work and added sheer dead weight and it was removed). The owner drove it for about 10 years and the car moved from Calif. to Wyoming to Washington state while the owner was transferred to new duty stations. It has several cool old decals in the windows which show some of its history. When the owner got out of the Air Force in 1982 he moved back to his home state of South Carolina, so this Z was never exposed to salt and is virtually rust free (only 2 small rust spots each the size of a quarter in the inner rear wheelwells...all early Zs I've seen have these same rust through spots due to clogged water drain holes on these cars...also very minor rusting under the original white vinyl top). A common area of rust on early Zs is the area under the battery...this car is pristine in that area with only minor surface rust. The floors and body underside are completely pristine and rust-free, and the underside still has the factory sprayed underlayment material and original orange paint. The Z was stored for approx 20 years and then given to the owner's son about 10 years ago. He didn't store it properly and the dash cracked (beautiful '72 dash is included with the sale), and the lower driver's seat disintegrated due to the hot South Carolina sun. I bought the car in 2010 when the owner's son had financial issues. This is an extremely original 240Z with nearly all of its factory installed components still with it: 14 inch steel wheels and unused Toyo spare (4 wheels are dated 2-72, and spare is dated 3-72), hubcaps, Hansin ignition coil and NGK spark plug wires, Hitachi voltage regulator and battery cables (note...alternator has been upgraded to a 60 amp unit for brighter lights at night and volt reg is now bypassed), radiator cap and radiator (cap still holds good pressure), nearly all of the braided hoses and wire hose clamps (2 of the hoses still have factory labels on them), Nikki fuel pump (now replaced...orig comes in a box to be reinstalled by you...it still pumps ok and was replaced to be on the safe side), smog pump, air cleaner and heat ducting hose underneath it, wiper arms, horns, windshield washer tank, floor mats (with "Z" logo...among many options that were dealer-installed), carpet and jute underlayment, console and white vinyl pleated strut and floor tunnel coverings (need replacement or re-dying), door panels, headliner and sunvisors, seatbelts, Hitachi AM-FM radio (now replaced with a Pioneer AM-FM-CD and Bose speakers behind the seats...orig. radio is included with the sale)...you get the idea...it's extremely original! The blower control switch was inop and replaced by the previous owner with a toggle switch (I will include a nice blower switch with the sale). The engine starts hard due to the carbs needing rebuilt...the choke doesn't fully work on the carbs (a pair of rebuilt carbs worth several hundred dollars goes with the sale...I didn't get around to installing them). After 3-4 minutes of warming up the engine revs freely to redline, and the engine doesn't stumble or die...it runs great after it's warmed up. There is also no rear-end whine in this car (frequent in these early Zs)...it shifts and drives beautifully with great acceleration and handling on curvy roads (it still has its original 4-speed trans and 3.36 rear-end). I recently replaced the rear struts with Monroe Gas Magnums (fronts were still fine...a pair of new front struts is included in the sale for later installation by you), and I also replaced the rear brakes and wheel cylinders due to slight brake fluid leaking (no leaking after the repair). It still has the original springs that haven't sagged in 40 years (it was stored on jackstands for 20 years which saved the springs), and I replaced the tires with Toyo Extensa sport radials in P195-75R14 size (the orig tires were also Toyos) and they handle great. This Z also has an extremely rare optional back seat that the first owner had installed so his young son could go for joy rides with dad and mom (a Z expert at a show told me he has never seen another one like it...the seat is in great shape and still looks like new). The first owner had crappy plastic "sport mirrors" installed at the dealer and both were broken when I got the car...they are both removed and their mounting holes are visible on the upper outer doors. The car was repainted in the early '80s and a small amount of filler was used behind the right door due to a small dent...the paint is faded a lot the car could use a repaint. The floors and body of this Z are solid as a rock and this Z will be an extremely easy restoration. The car's unusual white half vinyl top is still in place and actually looks kinda nice (it is listed on the dealer-installed options on the bill-of-sale and also in the original photos of the car taken when it was new...it makes it stand out at shows). This car is a rare color scheme...code 110 Persimmon (red-orange) with a white interior and will look stunning when it's redone. The seats obviously need re-doing due to sun and age damage (factory correct covers are available through Classic Datsun in Calif.), and the rear plastic interior pieces are broken and removed (nice originals are included with the sale). The left "sugar scoop" fiberglass headlight bucket is slightly broken, but I'm including a perfect one with the sale. The front valence panel is bent on the driver's side, but a nice one is included with the sale. All instrumentation works except the clock. The keys don't match due to the ignition switch being replaced by the previous owner. The wipers and horn don't work, which I feel is due to a small wiring issue from when the previous owner replaced the ignition switch. Obviously there is no warranty on this car, but I'm sure you'll be ecstatic when you get here and see it and drive it. Its originality, rare color scheme, low miles, and documentation absolutely blow away other Z guys at shows (it has been to several local Z shows and it always draws a crowd). I'm willing to ship this car to Australia, Japan, Canada, England, Germany or the US (and nowhere else), but you must arrange and pay for the shipping and it must be removed from my premises within 30 days of the close of the sale. I prefer cash in my hand, but I will accept a bank transfer also. You will get a notarized title sent to you via certified mail once it's paid for, and I'll take time off from work to accomodate your pick-up schedule if necessary. I urge you to come look at it before you buy it...again, no guarantees on its condition (other than my description...please note my nearly 600 perfect feedbacks). A down payment of $500 via Paypal is due within 48 hours of the end of the sale...if you don't pay the balance within 7 days you will forfeit your down payment. If the down payment is not made within 48 hours I will relist it. If you show up at my house and feel this car has been misrepresented I will refund your down payment. I reserve the right to block buyers with excessive bad feedbacks or buyers with less than 10 feedbacks (call me first if you have less than 10 feedbacks). If you want the ultimate 240Z, one that will do nothing but increase in value over time, one that has all the parts needed to restore it, one that is heavily documented and has a complete history, one that is numbers-matching in every way, one that is virtually rust-free, one that has an extremely rare and cool back seat, and one that will make other Z driver's very jealous, then you've found your car! Call me at 614/769-5868 with any questions. I'm selling it at a loss, so $5,000 is my bottom dollar...there isn't a better 240Z deal on here! Thanks for your interest and happy bidding! PS...I have a complete front and rear suspension from another 240Z, an extra E88 cylinder head, a later model 260Z 5 speed transmission, and a 3.90 differential for sale as well...they are not included with this sale but can be purchased and picked up when the new buyer comes to get the car.
