Vehicle Detail
1952 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible w/parts car In 1952 Chrysler New Yorker featured the 2nd year 180 hp (130 kW) FirePower Hemi engine. The engine became a popular choice among hot rodders and racers alike, a trend that continues to thrive today with its namesake second generation model. The FirePower Hemi equipped cars could accelerate 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 10 seconds, faster than the Oldsmobile 88 Rocket engine of that time. The purpose of the hemi heads on the 1951-1954 Chrysler New Yorker was to achieve exceptional volumetric efficiency and truly outstanding performance, while relying on a lower compression ratio that could allow the use of lower-octane fuels than comparably sized non-hemis -- or, conversely, producing a lot more power than comparably sized non-hemis of the same or even higher compression. This the hemi proved, in competition as wide-ranging as the Mexican Road Race and at National Hot Rod Association dragstrips, Le Mans, and the stock car oval tracks. It was expensive to build, and Chrysler several times abandoned it. In the early 1950s, though, the hemi reigned supreme among V-8s. The New Yorker also offered Fluid Torque Drive, a true torque converter, in place of Fluid Drive. Cars with Fluid Torque Drive came only with Fluid Matic semi-automatic-transmission and had a gear selector quadrant on the steering column. Power steering, an industry first, appeared as an option on Chrysler cars with the Hemi engine. It was sold under the name Hydraguide. The 1952 was the last year for the 131.5 in (3,340 mm) wheelbase chassis for the New Yorker. There were no significant changes between the 1951 and 1952 Chrysler New Yorker models (the only obvious difference was the incorporation of backup lights into the tail lamp assembly of the 1952s), and Chrysler didn't even keep separate production records for those two years. The reason was the Korean conflict, which many feared would stop civilian car production dead, but didn't. Chrysler tried different body mixes each year. For 1951 the Chrysler New Yorker could be ordered as a sedan, club coupe, Newport hardtop, convertible, or Town & Country wagon. For 1952, with Korean-caused production cutbacks, all but the sedan, Newport, and convertible were scrubbed. The 2nd year for Chrysler's legendary 180hp 331cubic inch Hemi motor and with an estimated 814 produced, one of the lowest production years for the already low production New Yorker convertible. This rare convertible is reported to have been a Arizona car since new and has the optional Fluid Torque transmission and power steering. It is in need of full restoration but is very complete and comes with a complete 1951 New Yorker sedan that also has a 331 Hemi motor, for parts. Motors on both cars turn but have not been run. The convertible has typical convertible rust damage from being out in the elements. areas of the floors and trunk have rusted from the inside out. It does not appear to have any collision, or repaired collision damage. It has good seat frames and an excellent top frame that appears undamaged. Cast trim is all usable for restoration- not broken or cracked. An ambitious project but a very rare and valuable car. The 1951 parts car comes with a Arizona title from 1962 and the 1952 Convertible is sold on a bill of Sale. If necessary, an Arizona title can be procured for export reasons. Vehicle is advertised for sale locally and seller reserves the right to end auction at any time. Vehicle is available for inspection locally in Scottsdale, Arizona.
