Do you remember the big '80s? I sure do -- I was a senior in high school when this Saab was sold. The 80s were totally awesome in many way, but when it comes to car design, er, not the greatest era. Generic styling of Poldsmobuicks and Flincurys, to say nothing of the K car, made it easy to yawn.
But fortunately, bucking the "car as utility" trend, Saab surged ahead, earning recognition for its quirky and brilliant design trends. From the 900's famous fishbowl windshield to the airplane inspired dash through the styling of the curvaceous rear doors and elegatly angled trunk, this Saab broke every trend and established a look Saab would build on for the next quarter century.
This particular Saab is a 16-valve 900S model. The S has 125 horsepower, 15 more than the base 900. The S came with lots of nice amenities, including power windows, cruise control, and alloy wheels. This car has a sunroof too. Most everything on the car works -- all windows, locks, lights, that sort of thing -- but the windshield wipers are broken and the stereo lights up but makes no sound.
The thing that most excites me about this car is the straightness of its body. It has remarkably few marks of any kind for its age and no evidence of accident repairs or rust. The glass is all good. On the inside, the purple cloth seats are slightly faded, but not torn, and still feel great. The worst cosmetic issue is the dash, which as shown is cracked. The glovebox trim is also showing its age. But overall, this is a really nicely preserved 26 year-old Saab. If you like this classic body, it's getting hard to find ones this clean.
My name is Brewster Thackeray, and I'm both the eBay guy and the classic car nut working at Fiat of Alexandria. My colleagues all laughed their heads off when they saw me chasing the lady who traded this car in on a new Fiat. They knew I could not wait to get it listed and off to a Saab enthusiast! I chatted with the owner and one thing I thougth was neat -- she had been using this 26 year-old Saab as her daily driver and had covered 1,500 miles in the past month; it was not a mothballed car. She was trading it in because she wanted a smaller car for the city (not newer, just smaller!)
We inspect and service most of our trades, but due to the age of this one our management asked to just get it listed and sold as-is. That means you will get a lot of Saab for very little money. However, as-is does mean as-is (and no warranty). If you want to inspect the car before your purchase, please do. I have described the car as accurately as possible, and I've driven it and it feels good all around to me, but again, it has not been inspected. The tires as shown look good, the lights light, and I do not know of any reason other than the broken windshield wipers that it would not pass inspection today.
