The Mercedes-Benz 280SL and its siblings are perennial favorites among car enthusiasts of all types. Nicknamed “Pagoda” for the distinctive concave hardtop design, the R113 series (the internal model designation) was an exceptionally well-engineered machine in the tradition of all great classic Mercedes-Benz. The R113 was the direct replacement for the 190SL and was intended to be a sports car for those who preferred a more relaxed form of driving. The crisp, clean lines are timeless and classic. With the factory supplied soft top and removable hard top, the SL makes for an ideal all-weather touring car. Built in 3 evolutions starting with the 230SL, 250SL and finally the 280SL, the R113 was carefully evolved to balance comfort, power and drivability. All were fitted with Bosch mechanical fuel injection that provides smooth power, easy startup and exceptionally modern driving characteristics even by today’s standards.
The car shown here is a 1971 280SL featuring the torquey 2.8 liter inline six, four wheel disc brakes and desirable automatic transmission. It is presented in very original condition having covered only 66,000 miles from new. It looks fantastic with newer white paint and excellent chrome all around. It is in equally excellent running order, having just completed a 200 mile drive from Boston to New York without a single issue. These cars are sought after for their drivability and this SL is no exception. The robust “six” starts right on the key and exhibits no smoke and good oil pressure. The transmission shifts crisply, exactly as it should. It has been exceptionally well serviced and extensive records will be provided. With a recent exhaust system and many other service items, this 280SL is ready to be enjoyed today. Inside, the original black interior is in excellent condition. The carpets, seats, hard top headlining and soft top are all in good condition. The wood trim is also in very good condition and even the original Becker radio is still in place. It is a real delight to drive – relaxed and comfortable with just the right edge of sportiness - and it sounds fantastic! This 280SL would be the perfect companion for autumn drives or for a nice cruise to a weekend car show.
A few minor flaws are visible in the photos but should be pointed out - one wheel cover does need some touch up paint, the hood sits slightly high in front, and while the paint is overall very straight, there is a slight wave in the driver’s door, only obvious when looking for it. The car is structurally solid though we did find some slight surface rust on the back of the rear wheel arches and on the passenger rocker panel. This is minor and a result of nothing more than regular use. It can be easily repaired by the new owner with minimal effort. We carefully inspected the entire car and found no other issues.
