Vehicle Detail
Hi, selling my 1969 Firebird 400 stick rag top. PHS paperwork lists it as a true factory Firebird 400 option rag top. It has a non no.s Pontic 400 and a newer 5 speed. 1 of only 4,601 400 4spds engine combo's for both coupe and convertible, so the rag tops are definitely lower on the production totals. Special ordered with Winward Blue paint. As listed in the PHS paperwork, 3 colors are special... Carousel Red, Goldenrod Yellow, and Winward Blue, the color this one was ordered with and blue vinyl interior and Black rag top. Comes with its PHS documentation. Very few ever built with these colors. Factory 160 speedo, what was a heavy duty 3 speed (standard with the Firebird 400 option) now has a newer Borg Warner 5 speed. Bought it in need of total resto, and now runs and drives, but have more cars than I can finish, so its up for someone to finish her and have a hot car and factory rare rag top! This ride was what looks like old school "nosed and decked" meaning, removing emblems, and modifying the appearance. This car needs to be redone, actually has a newer Pontiac 400 bolted to the 5 spd, The wiring behind the dash is not all connected, but the car now runs on its own and sounds great! Car is sold with clear title. A rare 400/stick car. BODY: as you can see in the pics, it needs some tlc, the floors, trunk pan, quarters, etc are in need of replace, fenders are oddly missing the 69 vents on the sides, so either they are mudded over or he replaced the bottom ends? The "salt and pepper shaker" canisters in the trunk corners are intact, found the original 400 exterior trunk emblem and you can see where the factory holes were covered over and repainted. So its the orig. trunk lid as well. The rockers are decent considering the age and other work needed. The bottom door edges are ok no rot The 400 hood is in excellent shape, and it looks like the previous owner was starting to sand the front paint off, so what you see is not faded, it had been sanded. As stated, its a factory Blue on blue car. Doors and front fenders are also in decent but not perfect shape, needing some attention to the lower ends. Chrome front and back are ok, also not mint, but not rotted, and are restorable. INTERIOR: as you can see in the pics, the interior needs to be redone, but the door panels and rear side panels are ok for driver/rat rod. Was an original Blue vinyl interior car but now has black Camaro bucks up front,(driver quality, not mint) and the original blue rear seats needing total redo. Car has tilt column, Formula steering wheel, also a working aftermarket tach and gauges, all work. Nice 160mph speedo. Was set up with monster cable audio sound system which is mostly gone. Also a pic of one of the two orig. blue vinyl buckets that go with the car and a camaro rear seat pair, in near mint shape. DRIVE TRAIN: As I stated in the beginning, this car was a WZ code original 400 engine out, heavy duty 3 speed. Now a newer 400 and borg-warner 5 speed. Engine has an Offenhauser intake, Mr. Gasket aluminum/phenolic riser, Holley 650 Double Pump. Don't have any info on the rebuild, but its been done over sometime recent to it being parked. Has headers into decent exhaust and what looks like the factory chrome splitter tips. Drive shaft has been balanced, has a Rhode Island Driveshaft label attached. Added new carb riser, gaskets, high energy ignition distributor, and brand new large dia wires. Engine sounds great, strong, have yard driven, but not street ready. The tranny is bolted to the engine and a hard block of wood to seat the tranny on the cross-member. Needs to have a rubber mount installed, small fix. RAG TOP: The frame looks solid, front edge could be sanded but the bows look nice, the whole assembly needing some greasing, lubrication, since this car has been parked since 2004. Looks like a sand and paint before the new top is installed should be all that is needed. This is a very rare Firebird 400 stick. TOTAL PRODUCTION FOR 1969 MODEL YEAR: Model Production Style Code Qty. Built 2-dr Coupe (22337) 74,673 2-dr Convertible (22367) 11,641 Trans AM Coupe (22337) 689 Trans AM Convertible (22367) 8 Only 4,601 400/manual trans combos sold, both coupe and convertible, out of close to 87,000 Firebirds built, shows the rag top 400's are super low in production totals. Thanx for looking! On Sep-13-12 at 00:13:41 PDT, seller added the following information: Engine has an Offenhauser intake, Mr. Gasket aluminum/phenolic riser, Holley 650 Double Pump.
