Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This is a fun bus to drive but is in average condition, in my opinion. When we purchased it 5 years ago, we had it tuned-up, new brakes, new tires, rebuilt axle bearings and a new battery. It has only been driven 1,700 miles since, all local trips. It has most of its original features including the 1970’s plaid seats. It was re-painted by the previous owner. It’s a 4-speed standard engine. Seat belts: 3-point on the front buckets and 2 lap belts on the rear bench. It has many cabinets and drawers, all in good working order. The seats are in decent shape, with the front driver seat having a burn hole and starting to wear on the edges and the same wear on the passenger side. The rear bench seat has been recovered with the original left underneath. It has a sink and water pump, ice chest, 110-volt outlet, sleeps 4, luggage storage on top. The mileage states 55,668 on the odometer but I suspect it’s 155,668 as there is a reference to an oil change in the original driver’s manual at 68,000. Ultimately the mileage cannot be guaranteed since it exceeds its mechanical limits.Known Issues It could use a tune-up again as it runs rough or stalls when wet or cold.It needs a new muffler – it’s loud! (it was never quiet but it's gotten worse) When shifting into third gear, you need to double-clutch or it will grind. Double-clutching allows it to go in smoothly.(inherited this issue) The pop-top is functional but on one side, the inner canvas has rotted away; the zipper and outer mesh screen is intact so no bugs can get in but if it rains, you would need to slip some plastic over the hole in the canvas. The rest of the pop-top is intact, no holes and zippers all work. I assume the canvas to be original or certainly not new. The handle that you hold to lift up the pop-top is broken on one end, still functions though. There are no visors. The antenna is broken off. The passenger door is missing the “ball-part” part of the window crank but it still functions fine. The radio worked when we first got it but turned off when going over bumps and now does not turn on, suspect a loose wire. The radio is a Kenwood, with CD player. There is sporadic rot around some of the door openings and inside the wheel wells. There are a few holes from the rust in the wells. There is surface rot starting to show, especially around windows and doors. There is one dent on the left rear and that is now chipped. (tree branch fell on it in wind storm) The interior wood veneer is chipped and torn in many places. It would look better totally stripped and painted or re-veneered.There is a crack on the luggage carrier in the passenger-side corner (inherited this issue). It needs a new gasket for the luggage carrier (inherited this issue). There is a crack on the body, passenger-side, just below the carrier (inherited this issue). There is a crack in the windshield, looks like from a rock; it has never worsened or prevented passing inspection (inherited this issue). There are heater controls but heat does not work, heater boxes long since rusted away. It’s not the most pristine VW bus but it’s fun to drive around town. With some TLC, this bus could really look and sound nice. We bought this for something fun to drive around in during the summer months. It has served that purpose but it needs better care, better storage and someone who has the time and expertise to fix the known issues and make this the bus that it can be. I have attempted to detail all that I know to be wrong so you can bid accordingly. I am, by far, no expert and may have missed something wrong with the vehicle – there is no intention to mislead, I want the next owner to know what they are getting and have their expectations met. I have posted a video and pictures to better demonstrate what I have described above. As such, the vehicle is SOLD AS IS. I may not be able to respond to questions the last few hours/minutes of the auction, so please ask early. I warn you in advance, I am not a “car guy” but will do my best to answer your questions. Note well, all answers to questions will be posted for all to see so as to assist with transparency and education of all potential bidders. I am not interested in offline sales during the auction period. The buyer is responsible for vehicle pick-up or shipping. Full payment is required within 7 days of auction close.
