In 2010, VW introduced the new Golf R (replacement of the GTI R32) at the Frankfurt Auto Show. This car looked to be a homerun. Of course, there was no word of this car being delivered to the U.S. Furthermore, there was no discussion of the “new-look” transferring over to the Jetta line-up. So, if you want something that doesn’t exist, what do you do? You build your own!
The owner of this car fell in love with the looks of the Golf R, but really needed the practicality of the Jetta Wagon with the economical 42mpg turbo diesel engine. Initially, he thought he would source all the Golf R bits and pieces in Europe, purchase them, and install them here. He soon learned that making a car look OEM is easier said than done. For the next year (and nearly $20,000), the car went through a painstaking facelift. The end result was well worth it. The car looks exactly the way the factory would have built the car. The details are what separate this JSW (Jetta SportWagen) from any other custom VW. In fact, this painstaking process was well documented by a recent magazine article:

The car was purchased new in May of 2010 from Pacific VW in Los Angeles. The car was nicely optioned from the factory with the following:
Touchscreen Navigation System

The MSRP was over $30,000.
The project began with finding the right partner to turn the owner’s vision into a reality. This was not a job for your basic tuner shop. OEMplus of Southern California was selected. OEMplus is a major importer of European-spec parts since for nearly 10 years. They have all the right connections to acquire all the non-U.S. available parts needed for the project. The following enhancements were made to replicate the Golf R:
Golf R brakes (upgraded rotors, calipers, pistons, pads, and hardware)
Custom steel brake lines
Custom fabricated front fenders to fit properly with Golf R front bumper
Golf R front bumper/valance
VW Votex side skirts and rear valance
Custom painted side mirrors, trim, and antenna
Hartman HRS6-204 wheels (custom built for VW)
KW Variant2 coilovers
European only software flash for Video In Motion on the navigation screen (so you can watch DVDs while moving).
Purchasing these uber-rare European-only parts was less than half the battle. The amount of hours to make sure everything fit just as if it came out of the VW factory was insane. The owner is an absolute perfectionist and wanted there to be no difference in the quality of work from a brand new VW. This maniacal pursuit on the details might go unnoticed by some. However, that was the point.
Many people have asked why there were no modifications done to the drive train. The owner was adamant that this car drive and perform like a stock VW. This not only makes the car more livable on a day-to-day basis, but it retains its fuel economy, ensures reliability, and does not void the factory warranty.
The factory bumper-to-bumper warranty is good through May 2013 or 36,000 miles. The drivetrain is under factory warranty until May 2015 or 60,000 miles. From here, the owner added an additional 2-year extension to the warranty.
The original wheels with near new tires are available for an additional fee.
