1974 BMW 2002 non-running project - would need to be recovered and towed - ZIP 48051 Chesterfield, MI. (about thirty miles north of Detroit, MI., below Port Huron, and quite close to Interstate I-94...) Malaga (a nice period maroon) on light gray (this a rare interior hue on a late car) VIN 4223412/clear titleSee detailed photos of car via fotki account 'bmwmalaga' and look under BMW 2002 photographs file ZF 4-speed (1:1 direct top gear; i.e. not an overdrive transmission) What is highlighted in BOLD is intended to reveal what you should be most concerned with, although I hope for strengths contrasted to weaknesses that someone might opt to bid. Thanks... M. K. (this posting has been mildly updated to relate some parts serviced or replaced otherwise unmentioned; i.e. Bosch rebuilt starter, the inclusion of a pair of driveshaft center support bearings, two drive couplings (one ancient BMW OEM indeed marked as a 'Guibo'), etc. Thanks.) A non-running project based on a California-sourced import brought to the Midwest and garaged since. Transmission has lost third gear (an undetected tail shaft seal leak with this my punishment of sorts), although a replacement standard ZF 4-speed replacement (from a 1972 2002) is included with a seal kit, hardware, and OEM slave cylinder. Many OEM parts and much work performed that any BMW 2002 would require. For sale as is and where is with no guarantee intended or implied. Uncommonly complete and prepared for a new life. Some spares, many manuals, all receipts since my acquisition of the car. Owned since 1995, last on road in 2003, preparing for return to school and cannot keep. Though very little in the way of resources could be directed towards this project, what work was performed was executed intelligently and with the best materials and insight that could be applied. Better examples cost more, but should a project well supported by manuals and work already performed upon this example suit your needs and station, perhaps this is what you desire. View this as 'Bring A Trailer' material... Many pictures taken, and exhaustive number for nothing less than such will do for such online. See fotki online photo hosting account 'bmwmalaga' to inspect all that I've taken. Car purchased as a barely running project hauled from California in 1995 bearing maintenance tags from shops in Orange County, although absent an alternator ground wire it couldn't have traveled far in the state of tune it was in. Smaller parts were acquired and added as the vehicle was relegated to a garage, and for reading and research, systems were quietly overhauled. No metal work was ever done by this owner, nor was the engine removed or overhauled. This is a non-matching numbers example with a '69 date coded block, a '74 E21 head, although visually and likely mechanically it strays little from stock. To facilitate service, the distributor number has been recorded and in included in the service history provided. The odometer was frozen when I purchased it, whereas in my care I believe I put perhaps 5,000 miles further on it. The 130,000 miles recorded in the eBay mileage field represents a good faith estimate. Though almost never run, efforts to sort the vehicle included an overhaul of the brakes (now requiring a further overhaul for sitting so long), a rebuild of the Weber carburetor with the addition of an adapter that mates it to a stock air filter housing that calls home to a K&N air filter, plastic media blasting of select under hood aluminum components including the cam cover and intake, and replacement of all rubber hoses with OEM items. The ignition system features a replacement Bosch 'blue' coil, BERU wires (better than the Bosch set available for this application), and Bosch cap/condenser/rotors/plugs. A Bosch rebuilt starter has also been fitted - one of the last things added. The fuel system forward of the firewall features replacement OEM metric rubber fuel hose employing OEM clips, while a tii-style canister fuel filter has been introduced into the line leading to the Weber replacement carburetor. The carburetor floats have been set to the proper default level, with fine tuning required. The water choke has been rebuild, with water hoses leading both to and away from it replaced, again with the proper clips. With the removal of the intake all gaskets were replaced with OEM items, and those studs that could be replaced were. All smaller hardware that could be identified in parts manuals and replaced with OEM items were replaced. The cam eccentrics were adjusted, and happily the cam was good enough to allow an adjustment to be made to bring matters back to spec. Continuing under hood, a replacement standard capacity metal radiator was among the last things ordered and fitted, whereas a Continental fan belt, a replacement water pump, and a OEM replacement red plastic fan with intact blades is also seen. A Bosch-rebuilt alternator is seen, although the alternator harness is delicate and bears evidence of repairs. A surely dead OEM battery has been fitted, whereas the battery cables both positive and negative, also OEM, were replaced. A factory battery tie-down was found and fitted, whereas all nose panel electrical clips that could be reached and replaced were, yet again with OEM parts. Most everything emission-related remains in place and largely untouched including the braided hose leading from the exhaust manifold back around the head towards the EGR filter under the intake, all the plastic lines and vacuum equipment seen on the firewall, and most of the SOLEX carburetor electrical harness that fell loose and dragged upon the roadway for a time. An OEM oil filter is seen, whereas the gasket between the block and dipstick tube inlet casting was further replaced. Engine turns, although I suspect fuel isn't being drawn into the engine irrespective of the voluminous work done forward of the firewall heading towards the carburetor. Spark, timing, fuel lines forward of the firewall plus mechanical fuel pump and fuel block and push rod dimensions good - hence I believe the fuel line forward of the tank is plugged or some other mysterious matter is afoot. The car will undoubtedly require a tow, hence I wish no one to arrive dropping in with a parachute imagining they could service the vehicle and drive away in short time. The brake booster hose was replaced, and standard spec. master cylinder has been replaced (in fact the last thing done to the car), while one metal brake line heading towards the rear of the car and situated atop the drive shaft requires replacement for the threads of the same seized in the master cylinder resulting in its destruction. A replacement metal brake line, again OEM sourced, is included although it will require careful bending to fit at it ought. ATE rubber hoses to the caliper were employed for the front brake rebuild and likely can be reused, whereas the rears were seized in place and remain original items internally constricted and essentially useless. Replacement rear rubber brake hoses, likely OEM, are found within the two boxes of parts that come with the car. The front wheel bearings were replaced with seal and caps, although for being static the overall impression is that the bulk of this work will have to be done again. The hood seals are replacements, both the end seals around the latch assembly as well as the lateral trim squeezed into the underside of the hood. No sound insulation squares are seen for the hood at some point was replaced. Most exterior rubber is quite poor, dried out and falling off and apart. The front glass seal isn't terrible, but the side rubber and rear screen rubber is poor indeed. A replacement rear window seal is included with lock strip, although the seal itself seems quite stiff. A spare rear window, also tinted and with a defroster grid, is included. Aluminum perimeter trim is in place and constitutes a mix of good used parts. B-pillar trim seems original and isn't worth saving. Lenses intact, all are date correct, although nothing concours here. Hella H4 headlamps fitted, whereas the brass rings holding them fast in place were media blasted and refinished. European market gray plastic bowls to seal the back of the headlamps were purchased from British '02 supplier Jaymic and discreetly added along with their retention rubber bands under hood. They look nice, afford a finished appearance, and hence I opted to add them. The body is in many ways 'just a car', but not a hateful wreck either. At some point a door, both fenders, the hood and the nose panel were replaced - likely early on. The nose panel leaded seam detail isn't there, hence a give away of sorts. The hood seems saveable, although it bears dents where some attempt to keep the choke open with a screwdriver and high winds brought about unfortunate contact between tool and hood stamping. The deck lid could stand replacement for the under panel seam isn't the cleanest seen. The trunk spare tire well is just average at best, whereas the rear shock towers appear good. Inner wings are clean, unusually so in a cosmetic sense for fearless use of acetone to scrub what I could! The firewall is clean, although someone was careless for removal and refitting of engine for the stamped steel edge of the seam looking forward of the firewall towards the engine was scrubbed and bent a bit. Underneath something of an oily mess, although to the degree I could degrease it to reveal what is there has been done in good faith. Quarters not terrible, front fenders likely rubbish items, rear exterior rockers do show signs of bubbling and hence are photographed for you to inspect. Roof good, although this isn't a sunroof car. Tail panel has some dents outward from the trunk for some faceless previous owner had cargo that shifted and disturbed it. This resulted in paint chipping and some corrosion that otherwise wouldn't be present on another 2002. Both license plate lamp housings replaced with OEM parts, bulbs changed, a spare OEM license plate mount is included, whereas fitting it would have necessitated cutting the harness - something I was unwilling to do. Although only of interest to Michigan bidders, a pair of never-issued 1973 plates with 1974 tab decals was purchased, with one fitted to the front of the car at present. The front plate mount indeed was further replaced and is clean. The grilles are held fast with OEM hardware and don't rattle. Front glass worn for use, small hole near rear view mirror, otherwise intact. Side glass doesn't seem to evidence much in the way of scratches. The driver's side door has a dent about the size of a basketball near the top of the character line, whereas skin of the door is slightly torn away at the top rear of panel. The trim across the top of this same door was damaged and was discarded. The door straps are original, worn and useless. The important door latch plastic caps, vital to ensure the doors will reliably close, have been replaced. The plastic scuff strips and/or trim overlays on the top of the rocker panels are the best I could find and are clean with the rubber seals squeezed in the and proper clips employed behind. All butyl beading for the body shell stamping edges looking into the interior are as clean as I could source, being solid and strong, not to mention clean. Both exterior rocker panels aluminum trim panels are OEM replacements and are very clean. Both are held in place with period clips for the new replacements were found not to hold them nearly so tight. The paint finish is hazy, scratched, discolored and looks different depending greatly on light level. A respray, likely the color used on every other 1982 Mustang GT, was performed by a previous owner but is so much rubbish now. Interior is a mix of impressions. When purchased, it had a mix of parts, but also enough evidence of coming through with a rare light gray vinyl interior. Two '74 2002's outfitted with the light gray interior were found with the interiors of each collected in their entirety to combine into one 'best-of' collection of used parts. What exists then is a set of gray door panels, the rear seating area side panels, the best non-deformed arm rest and door pulls color-matched that could be found, and the best, albeit used, seating surfaces that could be recovered from what was purchased. The gray interior is combined with standard 'salt and pepper' very low pile carpeting, while the console and dash are black as per standard. A very good console has been built up from good used parts, while two options exist for shift knob; i.e. the never seen standard black plastic/rubber model, as well as a factory accessory wood model bearing a BMW emblem in it's center. A foam donut fitted between the shifter and the shift boot has been purchased as is present in the box of parts still in its baggie. The shift boot is a very good example, again a recovered used item. All the delicate underdash trim panels are included, with metric hardware saved. Such do not survive well, while what is included is the best I could come up with for application to the matter. The seats still contain the original and decaying 'gummihaar' - or horsehair stuffing, whereas yes - it does smell very much like an old 2002! The seat surfaces on the driver's side has some tearing seen on both the backrest and seat base - but all the same, the best parts were saved and included with generally clean hardware and the nicest headrests I could find. The latch release surround trim has been replaced with OEM items, while the black plastic discs found beneath the head rest support shafts looking on the top of the seat back rest were also replaced. Neither the door panels or the rear package shelf overlay are cut for speakers, so not trashy in this regard. All seat belt hardware is in place (with caps on the hardware as per stock), while the emergency brake lever, trim and rubber boot is clean and presents well. The window cranks, door handle plastic trim inserts, as well as the vent window dials are OEM replacements and very nice indeed. The dash pad is cracked, although not so horribly and/or so grotesque that it forms the stuff of nightmares. All finer controls carefully removed, cleaned and reset. All handles and lenses replaced if need warranted. The trim shroud around the steering column on the top side bears the same VIN as the body, whereas the bottom extent of the same is clean and not hacked up by over sized key rings and such. The hardware holding it all together is OEM and tight, whereas the key cylinders have been read and the key codes recorded for easy reference. OEM Huff blanks were found and new keys cut - details, details... The glove box was replaced, with the same featuring intact tabs that have the rubber covered bumpers on either ends, whereas no wreckage from a spilled soda pop within across the textured liner. 1974-specific glove box manuals and the blue and clear plastic sleeve is found within, whereas this car come with a complete set of OEM blue service manuals (the two-volume set then) as well as a comprehensive range of proprietary manuals such as Clymer's, Haynes, and others scarcely ever seen online. This car has been loved - make no mistake. Factory carpeting still in place, although the plastic inlaid heel pad is cracking and some small tears are seen around the driver's side seat mounts. For replacing the seat mount rails I inadvertently tossed out the only outboard driver's side seat rail I had, hence the driver's side seat is not firmly installed. A replacement would have to be sourced by the new owner. The headliner is original, mildly discolored and evidences two small cuts for some forgotten transport of something too large late in 1977? The interior light has been replaced with an OEM item, although the same won't stay in place. The rear view mirror is in good shape, with the reflector not bearing any evidence of desilvering. The rear quarter window latches are clean and represent the best that could be built up. The interior trim caps on the latches have also been replaced and look nice. The instrument cluster has been torn down and rebuilt with care, including a new (not rebuilt) Wallosch and Noch '74 USA speedometer and odometer gauge that has never registered or turned a mile in this '02. Four '74 faux wood clusters were inspected and compared to fit the one that is found here, whereas the lenses were polished with the total effect being nice again. All bulbs were replaced, with the cluster illumination is crisp and warm when switched on. The steering wheel is a '74 USA 2002 tii textured rim model, itself a bit rare. Horn tabs removed and replaced, contacts cleaned, whereas indicator stalks tight and positive in their action. Cancelling cam for indicators seems not to work, but same is present. The console is not currently installed, although resting quietly it is largely assembled in the passenger's foot well. The heater has been bypassed, although the existing core and all parts surrounding it are present and quite serviceable. The interior door trim panels are off the car, although weather liners have been cut and the correct OEM clips to hold the panels in place are included. Some assembly required, but with a good start afforded then. The chassis is largely stock and employs parts well used and desiring replacement. The rear shocks were replaced with OEM standard items, but all bushings, all steering parts, the strut rod bushings, etc. are original to the car. The small gray caps squeezed atop the upper strut bearings were found at some point and installed, but most everything here is sloppy and loose. An ANSA sport exhaust system (very LOUD this) was fitted, but by now is so much junk. The exhaust manifold has been replaced with a standard '74 USA emission casting, the casting media blasted and high-temperature powder coated to appear as cast iron. Proper copper OEM fasteners used, although rear stud oil leakage from head an issue. The differential is a standard open-type, whereas the standard 3.54 gear is likely contained within. The same was drained, with the fluid replaced with the proper type. Mandatory options included tinted glass as well as front and rear sway bars in 1974, hence standard sway bars front and rear are noticed. Tires to be included are probably useful only to roll the car, being now discontinued Yokohama AVS 205-60-13's. They are mildly flat spotted for sitting too long, but would suffice to again facilitate transport of the project. Five correct offset standard styled pressed steel wheels are included, complete with replacement OEM lugs and a set of four standard OEM trim caps. The pressed steel wheels included were painted by some previous owner black, although they are very clean and generally free of corrosion should a stock look be desired. One lug stud is broken on one of the rear hub, this rendering one corner just three studs to hold the wheel/tire assembly in place. The AVS tires and the standard rims will be mounted and installed on the car in anticipation of facilitating the removal of the car from a storage unit. The car is on jack stands at present as revealed in the photographs seen, and for the moment this helps facilitate inspection and the answering of questions. A light duty cotton car cover is further included. Well, that's it - as complete a review as I can afford, penned as though I was describing the same to a friend. For long a vital part of my life and identity, out and on it must go. Yes, the car can be inspected while the auction is in progress, whereas clarification and questions with be afforded and fielded as required. The text above is provided for information purposes only, although I hope you've detected honesty and good will interwoven through what is recorded here. Understand that bidding on a car is a serious matter consistent with the intent to both buy and recover said vehicle with the resources available to you in the present moment. I have a jack and can pull the car off of the stands to ensure it rolls, but otherwise work undertaken and transportation of the car is the buyer's responsibility alone. A deposit of $500 is required within 48 hours of the close of the auction, with the balance paid within one week. Recovery of the vehicle is required within a week and a half of the auction close - I will not sit on it. Thanks and may this work well for all involved. I'm Mike, my cell number is 586.303.6873, and email is, tellingly, bmwmalaga@hotmail.com. Kind regards to the '02 community, with this posting an invitation of sorts to join. On Aug-23-12 at 10:51:24 PDT, seller added the following information: Further photos have been uploaded to the fotki account 'bmwmalaga', better capturing the flanks of the car that show poorly in existing photographs. The door jambs and inner rocker detail is captured too. The fenders as related in the description are bolt-on items on a 2002 but for the leaded seam detail where they meet the nosepanel, and I've tried here to capture and relate that sense dictates their replacement. See the photographs, study them carefully, and know that I've tried to ground the description in realism rather than solipsistic fantasy. Thanks and kind regards... P.S. The hazard flasher assembly and ashtray assembly were replaced with OEM parts and are hence usually clean for a late '02. The brake pad and clutch pad pedal rubber was also replaced, although the pedal box bushings are original and rather floppy. Both front and rear BMW roundel emblems set into the hood and trunk respectively were replaced, as was the '2002' identifying emblem as seen on the back. Thanks... M.K.On Aug-23-12 at 12:42:09 PDT, seller added the following information: Although I hoped to be clear in my description of the vehicle, queries are received that suggest still more is needed. Trying if you will to address what I can, know that the repaint of this car was performed long ago by a previous owner and really is far past it's best. Dull, scratched, faded, etc. As captured within the first few lines of my admittedly long-winded description, this car is a non-runner, although it isn't as though the engine is missing internal parts or that a connecting rod (or two) is hanging outside a ventilated block. I can field solid questions, but I cannot sustain or expand upon dreams for I'm not a confidence man or grifter. Please inspect the photographs on view via fotki.com account 'bmwmalaga' and view them with the greatest seriousness. Thanks, and whew! Mike K.
