Vehicle Detail

This is a rare factory-authorized convertible! In 1986, Toyota piloted just 3 of these convertible MR2s, and in 1987, they offered just 15 of them. The cars were available only to the highest-selling dealerships in the USA, and any dealer that requested one could only get ONE. This particular car was originally sold in Michigan, and has lived the majority of its live in Michigan and Minnesota. I do not know how many are left on the road today, but based on the extremely limited number originally produced, it's probably not very many anymore. So, if you are a real Toyota fan, and especially if you are an MR2 fan, this is an authentic piece of Toyota history, sure to be a great add to your collection! This vehicle has a clear Minnesota title, and collector plates, so if you are in Minnesota, you'll never have to worry about registration once you transfer it. Other states, I do not know the laws in. Given its age, it should qualify for collector status just about anywhere. The body is in outstanding condition! There is no major visible rust anywhere on it, just a few small spots in the usual places. All doors, panels, and surfaces are dent-free, and the paint is in great condition with some typical, very minor scuffs and such, and one chip in the paint on the front left side bumper cover. Interior is in good condition for its age. It needs some love, no doubt, and a really good professional cleaning, but otherwise it's very good for the age! The only blatantly obvious missing/damaged parts are the storage box on the firewall between the seats is missing, and the flip-open covers on the ash tray and forward center console are missing. I have both of the missing covers, they are just not attached. Electrical: The dash clock does not work, but that was a very common problem with these vehicles, and there are a multitude of replacements out there. the passing or momentary hi-beams work, but the driving high-beam switch appears to be broken. All other electrical works as far as I know. headlights, turn signals, tail lights, backup lamps, all work fine. It has a generic, no-frills after-market radio/cassette installed, you might want to put a stock head back in for the stock look. Pop-up headlights work fine. The e-brake light is on on the dash, this could just be a loose connection on the brake handle position switch. I have not looked into it. The check engine light is NOT on, and has never come on as long as I have owned this vehicle. The previous owner was a certified Totyota mechanic and owns a full-time import auto shop, so it got all the engine service it needed right away. Mechanical: The e-brake cable is currently disconnected. The rear trunk release cable is also disconnected, in order to make the rear trunk "lockable" where someone can't just reach in and pop it open with the lever on the floor. The front bonnet trunk cable is fine. The fuel filler door cable is broken, I have the replacement cable and a new pull lever assembly for the floor, just haven't put them in yet. The photos show the fuel door missing, but that is only because the release cable is broken so I took it off. The door is in fine condition. All other mechanical is fine as far as I know. The A/C runs great, and blows cold. There are no shakes, rattles, or other signs of trouble while driving. The car handles like a dream, and tracks straight on. It's got plenty of pep and lots of grip for all the road you can throw at it. Engine: The engine runs like a champ, no function problems, no noises. It drives thru all 5 gears with no trouble (and reverse) and has no trouble handling the interstate and passing other vehicles. There is a small exhaust leak somewhere so it is a little bit noisy, but there is no tell-tale smell, and no rattles. It does not burn any oil, and there are no drips on the floor in my garage. No smoke or smell while driving. Roof: The roof canvas was replaced a year or so ago, and has no rips, holes, or other problems. The back window is soft and pliable, not cracked or scratched. It is easy to put up or take down with one person in about 2 minutes. 2 people could do it at a stop light. The roof framework is all present and works fine. Body: No damage anywhere on the body. All panels are in fine condition. The paint is in very good condition except for one chip on the left side front bumper cover. It does need a bath tho! There are a few very small spots of rust in some usual locations, nothing major or substantial. I believe the paint is original, there is no sign of a second coat where the factory vin stickers and other bits and bobs are. As seen in the various photos, the bonnet (front hood), rear trunk lid, right (passenger) door, and right side door frame all have matching VIN stickers that match the front firewall etching (also in photo), and you can see the original paint color is silver on all of the sticker and etched surfaces. The driver's door, left side door frame, and engine hood DO NOT have VIN stickers on them. Based on the reported accident from 1999 (way before I got it), that would suggest that the left side of the car was hit in some regard, and so the door, quarter panels, and engine hood were replaced. That would also mean if there WAS a sticker on the driver's door for Metro Motors, it is long gone, unfortunately. The rear trunk lid was NOT replaced since it still has the factory VIN sticker on it. So, as expected, the accident was only light body damage. There is no evidence of structural damage in those areas. In one of the photos, you can see the engine hood clasp bracket that was blue, so that was probably replaced with the other pieces. So it would seem these replacement parts all came from the same donor vehicle. Sorry there's no pic of the trunk, I did take one, but it's not showing up in the camera's list, don't know what's up with that. Nothing special about the trunk, it's well.... a trunk. It holds stuff. Most of the rubber mouldings and such are present, with minor exceptions. The caps are missing from the top of the A-pillars for example. For the most part the mouldings are in decent condition. What's the deal with the conversion?: There is precious little data out there about this. Probably the most notable source of info is Spider Bob (google is your friend). A lot of the info I have found is either directly from his report, or repeated thru other sources that appears similar to his data. If there was a sticker from Metro Motors on the car at one point, I haven't found it. If it was on the driver's door, that would be why, as the door was apparently replaced. Do your research, make the satisfying journey from discovery to desire to possession! As far as I can tell, from what little data is available, this car was one of the authorized conversions, and not a home-brew chop. Unless somebody can definitively point out an exact detail that suggests otherwise... If you are local to Minneapolis, you may come by to see the car, that's fine. Please send me a note thru the eBay note system with your phone number and I will call to arrange a viewing. Serious inquiries only, I am not interested in entertaining tire-kickers. Yes this is relisted. I thought maybe I would be able to get the house and still keep the toy, but the other half says "gotta go".... so .... your chance to win here! On Jul-25-12 at 12:36:21 PDT, seller added the following information: EDIT: Received this note from SpyderBob: Hi, This is Spyderbob (not spider bob) they'll find me in google under Spyderbob. If you'd like to add to your text you can say that I verified originality of the convertible based on the photos I've seen. Bob Thanks SpyderBob! :)
