1966 Datsun Fairlady 1600 Early Low Windscreen ModelMechanical and Cosmetic Restoration We have available a very early 1966 Datsun Fairlady 1600. The VIN is spl311-04275 and the engine is number is R 11685. The early Datsun Roadsters were imported to compete with the many thousands of British sports cars that had flooded the US. While providing possibly more reliable powertrains the coachwork was the weak point for the early cars from Japan. The earliest roadsters have a lower windscreen that gives them a much sleeker and sportier look, and make them highly sought after over the later DOT mandate cars. This car was produced before the requirement of the homely padded safety dash, so it has the earlier and more attractive dash unit from the factory. This particular low windscreen early car has undergone a frame off restoration on a rare rust free car. The body and chassis were separated to allow a correct and complete restoration. It looks nearly as good underneath as it does on the top. Every mechanical component was fully rebuilt including the engine, transmission, fuel system, brake and hydraulic systems. The chassis and body are excellent and it looks and drives very nicely with the upgraded 15X6 Superlite wheels and 195/60 Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires. The body is one of the best we have seen on a roadster, with no signs of rust or major accident repair even when viewed from underneath. No signs of filler covering spot welds or sloppy over spray. Body condition is important as the steel bodies on these early Japanese cars were not noted to be particularly well constructed. Accidents and rust ate more than a few of them in the last 46 years. The car is well finished in a high quality red paint everywhere, top, bottom and underside of panels. The paint has excellent shine and depth. The chrome is all good or new. The chassis was cleaned spotless and then painted black as original and all new suspension components were fitted. Panel fit is good and we believe all are original to the car. This west coast roadster was acquired by us a few years ago after an expensive and thorough restoration stalled when 90% done. The prior owner was wealthy and had funded the project with some big dollars when the shop that was to complete the car went out of business. While a set of top bows are with the car, and an old ugly hard top is included if desired, there is no soft top fitted. Overall the car is very well done with special emphasis on the mechanicals and paint. The only items that did not get the high quality attention the rest of the car received were some minor cockpit trim items, the dash face and dash top. We purchased the car since it was so far along and well done. Brought it to our shop and then completed the final mechanical hookups. After initial start up and sorting of the car, it was then sold it to a local Datsun enthusiast client. He drove it only on sunny days and logged just 1,000 miles in the last few years. Due to the care his aging mom needs and the lack of free time he has now asked us to market the car. This is one of the best Datsun’s we have driven and is ready to enjoy.
