This car is a labor love and my work in progress for the past five years. I’ve used it as my everyday car to work and needs as I brought it back to life. Its six-cylinder 2.8L engine runs nice, transmission shifts smoothly, and accelerates like a rocket. Looks and runs well, starts up right away, too. Its body is solid, with scratches and some dents, but it is solid with NO rust or damage, good tires, recent tune up. Excellent buy for someone who wants to fully restore this beauty to its original glory! The 280S model, one of the newly designed cars of the S-class, was first shown at the Paris Automobile Salon in 1972. It was the least expensive representative of the almost completely restyled new line of the large six-and eight-cylinder models, which shared the same basic 116 style chassis and body (450SE, 450SEL, and 450SEL 6.9). The model is slightly wider, lower, and longer than previous models. The radiator shell was longer and wider and the front light section was integrated into a wide unit curving around to the side. The rear light cluster was also redesigned in the manner of the sports models, with the dirt-repelling feature. Many new safety features had been incorporated into the design. The DOHC six-cylinder engine (M-110) developed 160DIN HP, but for the US a detuned version of 120SAE HP engine was marketed, with a lower compression ratio to comply with the revised EPA standards. It had a torque converter and a four-speed automatic transmission. The car also weighed 350 pounds more that the European model, and, hence had slightly slower acceleration. It still achieved the maximum speed of 170KM/Hr. (120MPH). Throughout its eight years (1972-1980) only 122, 848 units were made of which fewer than a few hundred remain in a roadworthy condition today (my estimate). In 1972 this car sold in the US for about $16,500, an average price of a low-end house then. The amazing thing about this car is its quiet ride, no-fuss engine, and very tight turning radius, despite its size (37.4ft.). During my five years of owning it, I have made it my project, as I enjoyed its ride. I have fixed the following during this time: Rebuilt steering pump, new front engine seal, new brakes all around with new master cylinder and front calipers, new tires, new Sears Diehard battery, new alternator, new smog pump, new sway-bar links, all new belts, new hood pad, major transmission service (new modulator, seals, and oil/filter), new rear engine seal, new starter, new lower ball joints, new muffler and resonator, new Bosch spark-plugs, new points, distributor cap, re-cored radiator and A/C condenser, new water pump, thermostat, coolant hoses, new combination switch that resets upon turning, new windshield and weather-strip, fully restored power sunroof that opens and closes smoothly, new ignition cylinder that uses the original car key. Although I do most of the work, a reliable shop has done the heavier work (I have receipts). The front seats were done new just before I purchased this car, so they are soft, but firm. There is a rip on the driver seat back cushion as shown in photos. The middle hand rest also has a slight tear. A reliable local upholstery shop has quoted $190 to fix both these items. Also, the right rear door has some dings that need attention. The A/C works, but as is normal for these models with servos, the heat does not. I have a replacement servo I’ll give with the car. The driver side window regulator is in need of replacement (the window rises smoothly but does not close all the way, leaving about an inch). I also have a replacement driver-side regulator to go. The car comes with a boxful of assorted parts. The car starts right up and runs smoothly with great acceleration with power to spare. Even at 90 MPH it quietly glides, yet is solid as a tank! If you are local to the San Francisco Bay area, feel free to get in touch to see this car and check it out for yourself. So, go ahead bid with confidence and own this car of dreams and make it your project to restore it to its full glory!
