Vehicle Detail
The Willy's Overland Company produced more than 335,000 jeeps for allied forces during World War II. The standard jeep sold sold well after the war, but the company wanted to go after suburban markets, hence the sporty jeepster was introduced in 1948. It was really a sports roadster that used many components already in production. It was equiped with a peppy four clyinder 134 cubic inch flat head engine, overdrive, a large convertible top, and side curtains. The jeepster was a really fun car to own - and it sold well throughout the 50's and 60's. This car has had 3 owners since new, and has never left Bedford, New York. It was bought new by one of the old storied families of Bedford that used it principally to ferry their children to and from the country club. Since the early 80's it has been owned and maintained by a well known Willy's collector based in Bedford. Unfortunately, he passed away several months ago and the family made the difficult decision, to let a new owner enjoy the car. The car is in original condition including top and side curtains, paint and upholstery. Some chrome has been redone in the last 10 years. Recently a total overhaul of the brake system was completed. New master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake shoes and springs were installed. The drums were cut. New front engine mounts were installed as well as new rubber mounts for the generator. The ignition system was checked and now the engine starts right up and runs fine, for a 64 year old engine, that has probably never been apart. A new convertible top and front wooden bow were purchased several years ago, but not installed so they are included in the sale. There is rust on the underbody but appears to be surface rust and could withstand a good sandblasting. This car, with a little bit of work could provide the owner with a lot of fun and is the perfect car by the beach or lake, in the mountains or just driving around town!
