Vehicle Detail
1973 Jensen Healey Road Rally Tribute Car You are bidding on a 1973 Jensen Healey that was restored in the tradition found in the big Healey Road Rally cars that dominated Europe in the 1950’s and 60’s. This car is “Pretty but not Perfect”. If you are looking for a perfectly correct restored car, keep looking because this is not the car for you. This car was built as a driver, but also needed to be fun and turn heads. The car has been cosmetically updated with a double humped roll bar, racing apron and cowl but being a classic, no sheet-metal was altered and the front bumper can be installed with only a few screw holes needing to be filled to return the car to its original state. The graphics are vinyl and can be carefully removed if originality is what you have in mind. Mechanical Information The car is a “barn find” out of Pahrump, Nevada. It had last been registered in California in 1992 and had been sitting for the last 20 years. The owner bought the car in ’76 and parked it in ’92 due to electrical problems. The owner said that he had the Lotus 907 4-cylinder engine rebuilt and that it has only 18,000 miles on it. I have no documentation as to this story, but after rebuilding the Dual Stromberg Carbs, the engine easily started and is a strong runner. The 4-Speed Manual transmission shifts well and the car has good acceleration. I installed new brake cylinders in the rear wheels and replaced both brake shoes. New Disc Brake Pads were installed on the front. Brakes are good! Paint and Body The Rally Red paint was just laid and the graphics were applied. The body was in fairly good condition with the only rust found in the driver’s side floor. Metal was added to this area for reinforcement. The car is heavily under-coated from the prior owner. The passenger door was damaged and has some bondo; the rest of the car had only cosmetic bodywork. On a scale of 1-10, I would say paint and body were at an 8. Good driver quality but not show worthy. Tires Tires have 95% tread but were mounted years ago. The ride could be improved with a new set. Rims are original with a 5th as a spare under the trunk. Electrical The Lucas electrical system proved to be unreliable. It is intact with minor systems operated through the ignition switch. I had to rewire the systems necessary for the operation of the vehicle. All lighting is rewired and working with the exception of turn signals. The odometer does not work. The gas gauge is missing a sending unit. The prior owner built a custom 20 gallon fuel tank for the car but failed to incorporate a sending unit into the tank. The new owner can correct this. An auxiliary electric radiator fan was installed for added cooling. The heater controls are broken and need replacement before the heater can be used. (really not a priority in Arizona) Toggle switches replaced idiot lights on the console to run various systems. Interior The car received a new interior with new racing seats and black carpet. The door panels were rebuilt with new black vinyl. 4-Point safety harnesses were installed as was a new Sony Stereo/CD. A speaker box was installed in the rear compartment under the racing cowl. The double-hump racing cowl was handcrafted from the tip of an army surplus missile and mounted just for fun. Smog Exempt The car is exempt from smog and safety standards here in Arizona. This is accomplished utilizing classic car insurance. Extra Parts Included Extra parts include a rebuildable aluminum alloy cylinder head and gaskets for the Lotus 907 engine and the two cam towers. An extra alternator and water pump/neck are also included. An original 4-speed transmission for the Lotus and a box of internal engine parts are included in the sale. A variety of electrical components include a turn signal switch, hazard switch and other electrical parts in their original Lucas boxes. The original front bumper and brackets are included as is the front fiberglass spoiler. The bumper is in poor condition. Also included in the sale is an Allison electronic ignition system in the box. This is over $1,000 in parts as listed on E-Bay and hopefully will keep the car running for years to come. Hard Top The car comes with an original Hard Top that is in good condition. Hardtops for this car are going in the $600 range and hard to find. It needs new top to body seals. The plexiglass vent windows will need to be replaced. With the racing cowl removed, the convertible top bows are installed and in good working order, a new vinyl top will need to be installed and is not included in the sale. The hard/soft top will clear the roll bar. Disclaimers I bought this car in February and built it to sell. I am not a professional builder but each car gets better with experience. It is pretty but not perfect. I am already over budget on the car but hope the new owner continues to improve performance. I enjoy doing paint, body and interior but am not much into engines and suspensions. After sitting for 20 years, many of the engine seals are dried out resulting in leakage. After being parked several days, the engine burns off this leakage during the first 5-10 minutes of operation which smells. I only get a few drips to the floor. With added driving time, these seals may swell and seal, otherwise, the new owner may want to start replacing things like valve cover gaskets to eliminate this. There are several things a new owner might want to improve on the car. A dash overlay is available (Delta Motor sports $130) although the Dash Mat covers the cracked, imperfect dash. An aluminum radiator would be warranted under racing conditions. The car runs a little warmer than I would like with our Arizona heat. The rack and pinion steering has several rough spots in it and should be rebuilt (Delta Motor Sports $250). A new Vinyl Convertible Top can be purchased (E-Bay $350). The suspension could be improved with new shocks and an anti-sway bar. The car rides like a 40 year old 2-Seater Sports Car….it is what it is…it was never meant to drive and feel like a new car…but it does get your heart pumping as you take a fast corner!!!! There are some size restraints. I am 5-10 and 210 lbs. and have difficulty getting in and out of the car. The racing seats are tight. A big man would have even a harder time. I will include in the sale a set of polyethylene seats to accommodate a bigger driver. They will need covers that can be purchased on E-Bay ($49). At Conclusion of Auction A $500 nonrefundable deposit is to be made within 24 hours. The remainder will be paid in the form of a cashier’s check from a major bank. The car will not be released until all monies have cleared. Transport will be the responsibility of the new owner with availability for pickup to be determined. I do not think I can get all the extra parts into the vehicle. These may have to be picked up or shipped. Do not bid if you do not intend to buy!! I have sold a few cars on E-Bay and I reserve the right to cancel your bid if your track record is questionable. I will block any further bids from you and wish you well. I have never ended an auction early, please do not ask for a “Buy it Now”. I do not wish to trade for your vehicle! If you have taken the time to read this, I hope you appreciate my attempt to describe the car as accurately as possible. You deserve to know what you are buying. Additional questions can be submitted through E-Bay. If you are in the area, or have a friend that could check the vehicle out, please contact me through E-Bay and set up an appointment. Happy Bidding!!!!! On Jun-03-12 at 18:10:43 PDT, seller added the following information: Sunday June 3, 2012 The hardtop is now restored with new seals and plexiglass side windows. I mounted it to the car for easier delivery for the new owner. All the spare parts will fit into the car for delivery except the extra transmission and the racing cowl. The double humped cowl was removed to mount the hardtop. On Jun-07-12 at 11:11:18 PDT, seller added the following information: Thursday June 7th...was able to rearrange things....the racing cowl fit into the trunk and the transmission is in the passenger compartment....all spare parts are now in the vehicle....no need for shipping of parts....Bid away!!!On Jun-08-12 at 06:59:04 PDT, seller added the following information: Friday June 8th...I added a "Buy it Now" at $5500.....the reserve is ready to drop with the next bid....should only be serious bidders in the game.......someone is going to get a great car at a great price...I have had alot of fun putting this one together but it is time for someone else to enjoy and I need the garage space for a new project....Happy Bidding!!
