Vehicle Detail
1965 Ford Mustang Coupe This gem of a car was produced in April of 1965. The DSO72 was in the San Jose California Ford plant; first sold at a Vallejo California dealership; second sale was in Stockton California to a private party. This car has had the same owner from 1974 to 2007 when we bought her in San Francisco, California. We are the third owners. As a late model ’65 she, therefore, has some ‘66 options installed at the factory. Some of these features are day/night rearview mirror; beveled wiper arm; carpeting installed up to the kick panels; and, the color of the car is a 1966 factory Tahoe Turquoise. The door plaque color code is blank, but after our painstaking research we discovered a tiny spot under the backseat side window which gave us the true factory color. This color was either a special order or we have to assume the factory decided to use a 1966 color as it was nearing the end of the 1965 production year. This makes this Pony a rare commodity. This car comes with quite a pedigree. It is a multiple show winner with some of the highlights being Best in Show in the San Rafael, California “May Madness” annual car show; Second in Class at the Marin Sonoma Concours d’Elegance; the Award of Excellence in the Mustangs Plus Annual Mustang Show; and, a recipient of a Sponsor Award at Cherries Jubilee Mortorsports Festival in Monterey (Laguna Seca), California. We are not alone when we say this is quite a car. The body has been restored to the original factory formula color with three coats of Dupont and two coats of clear. The paint was professionally applied, wet sanded, and polished to a high luster. This car has never been in the rain, has never been washed with soaps, or for that matter, has not seen a water hose. It has been garaged the entire time we have owned her and comes with a new (still in the box) California Custom Car cover. All the chrome has been stripped and re-chromed; all new rubber gaskets throughout (doors, windows, trunk, and hood); all new window felt; all the windows are original with the exception of the front windshield; driver’s side mirror is (NOS) factory remote; and all the stainless steel has been polished to a high luster (drip rail is the only aftermarket stainless). The interior has a new (NOS) headliner; door panels have been replaced to OEM specifications; arm rests have been replaced; horn ring has been replaced (made in USA); dash pad has been replaced; the carpet, front (bucket seats) and rear seats appear to be original. The trunk has been stripped, primed, and repainted with spackle (gray/white/black) paint. The trunk liner, spare tire cover, and jack pouch are all clad in the correct matting color for the year. The correct jack and tools are in the trunk; fire extinguisher is mounted in the trunk; with a new fuel tank and sender unit. The transmission is a C4 automatic. It was completely overhauled about 5,000 miles ago at which time a shift kit was installed. It has a new stock torque converter; new U-joints; and a transmission cooler mounted on the front of the radiator. The suspension has new upper and lower control arms; new idler arm; new strut arm bushings; new upper and lower spring mounts; new front lowering coil spring (front lowered about 2 inches for better handling); and new front and rear Monroe gas shocks. The brakes are factory 4 wheel drum brakes. They have been replaced along with all the wheel studs and lug nuts. The wheels have original wire wheel covers. 1965 was the first year Ford used the wire wheel covers. The wheel covers were purchased in the original boxes. The tires are P215/70r14 Kelly Explorer white walls. The engine is the original “c” engine 289 CID (the engine was rebuilt in 1987 and has only 26,000 miles on the engine. The engine and compartment saw the majority of our labor with over 90 hours of loving restoration. Noted below is as detailed as possible. All the engine parts, that could be, were cleaned with media blasting and then primed and painted to factory specifications. The new parts installed are as follows: Monte Carlo Bar; Export Bar; triple core polished aluminum custom radiator; polished stainless 15” side mounted overflow coolant tank; super high miler Goodyear silicone hoses (blue); 9.5mm Hipo silicone ignition wire set (blue); Protronics ignition system; Protronics “flame thrower” coil; new factory spec pushrods and rocker arms; new stock harmonic balancer; new steel 5 blade fan; rebuilt alternator; new belts; and, a new battery. Listed next are the Edelbrock performance items – high output aluminum water pump; 500cfm (polished) carburetor with auto choke; Performer Plus Camshaft kit for off idle to 5500 rpm; valve lift intake .448 and exhaust .472. The intake manifold is a polished Performer RPM 1500-6500 RPM Air Gap 302 and we installed an Edelbrock Performer link double roller link chain set. The valve covers are an Edelbrock C-26 polished Dual Quad and the Air Intake cleaner is an Edelbrock polished oval with reusable air filter element. To the best of our knowledge, this is what we have done to restore this spectacular Mustang. We may have missed some of the smaller items, but that would be a bonus to the new owner. This Mustang has had body and frame restoration and has been pain staking restored back to its original glory with “a few tweaks” under the hood for that “healthy rumble”. She has been pampered and cherished, but by no means is she a garage or trailer queen. She has been driven and enjoyed by all who have come in contact with her…she is quite a head turner.
