Vehicle Detail
The season is upon us! Time to enjoy open air driving in this holy grail 1985 4-Runner, or maybe build it into an awesome trail vehicle. Most agree thi is the best year, EFI and solid front axle, 5 speed. This guy also has power steering. It is a deluxe base model, my favorite... no carpet, no options, just a vinyl floor mat and cranks for the windows. The perfect Toyota, new enough yet still old enough and basic. I purchased it about 4 years ago, it had a blown head gasket on the original engine w/ 326k miles. It had lived in San Diego for most of its life, and had only been in New England for a year, so the body was very clean... it was a no brainer to snap up and rebuild it into a nice driver. The following is what happened. Lo and behold, a used LC Engineering 135 hp engine popped up on craigslist. 90k miles, run on Mobil 1 for its entire life, another no brainer, purchased (more info on this engine if needed). Found a 1986 Turbo truck R151 transmission and 23 spline transfer case, done deal. The engine received a few new gaskets and seals, same for the trans/case. A Centerforce pressure plate and stock disc connect the combo and are actuated by new Aisin master and slave cylinders. A stainless steel header and borla exhaust wrap it up. A new 3 core brass radiator and all Genuine Toyota hoses were installed to keep things cool and happy. The front axle knuckles, Aisin hubs, and brakes were entirely rebuilt last year. The knuckles were done using Toyota parts. The brakes consist of vented Centric Premium FJ62 rotors. The 4-piston calipers are the large units from a 95 T100, and are pressed on by a T100 master cylinder and booster. The rear brakes are stock drums. The system works great, and is a far cry from the stock solid rotors. Both front and leaf spring packs were rebuilt. They lift the vehicle a moddest 1.5", ride better than stock, and are supported by a new set of Koni 8241 adjustable twin tube gas shocks. The steering stabilizer was replaced with a koni gas unit. The wheels are stock steel, off white. Tires are brand new Firestone Destination A/T 235/75R15, all 5. The body is very clean except for the rear fender lips. Rust is just starting poke through there. An easy fix if taken care of soon. There is an aftermarket sunroof. The interior is nice. Again, it is a deluxe model, so every thing inside is manual in operation. The only thing power is the rear window which still works great. Other tidbits. The rear diff looks to have been rebuilt at some point. the front diff probably rarely, if ever, saw use. H4 Hella headlamps light things up. I have a roll cage I planned to install. It's a nos bolt in Smittybuilt unit from back in the day... included in the sale. What it needs. The shifter console needs to be completed. The R151 shifter sticks up further forward than the stock G and W series Transmissions. It needs a new throttle body, the shaft is worn and this allows the truck to idle high. Please aks any questions you have, promt replies always.
