In the late 70’s/early 80’s, the U.S. smog restrictions sucked all the fun out of our cars. Tuners were constantly looking for ways to make the German cars that hit our shores more fun. The BMW 320i’s were no exception. However, the big challenge was making them not only more fun, but also reliable and street legal. This all changed in 1981 with Century BMW in Los Angeles. As the largest BMW dealership in the North America, Century BMW decided to use its power to sell an exclusive model through their dealership. This model would soon become known as the “Century Turbo.” Working with both engineers and the California Air Resources board, they managed to put the fun back into these great handling BMW coupes.
The end result was magnificent. The horsepower gains ranged upward from 50-74% over stock at different RPM ranges. Max hp ratings were up to 140 at the rear wheels. 0-60 mph times were shaved by over 2.3 seconds. The improvements didn’t stop here. The Century kit would also include upgraded sway bars, springs, and shocks as well as exclusive Momo wheels and aero packages. Depending on which kit was selected, the prices added $3,300 to $8,700 to the stock price of $13,000. This option was not cheap, but it was 50-state legal and much better quality than some of the other options on the market.
This particular example was fitted with all the performance modifications available including the turbo engine and upgraded suspension. Momo wheels and front air dam were also included. The interior is primarily stock with the exception of a later radio and a 320i sport steering wheel.
The current owner recently underwent a knee replacement and can no longer enjoy this car. However, looking over his receipts, it is clear that he had a fondness for the car and certainly took care of it. Recently, a compression test was performed. The results were: #1-155, #2-155, #3-155, #4-140. These results are very good considering the age of the vehicle. Furthermore, the owner stripped off the original black paint and repainted the car. At the same time, he fixed some rust in the hood but found there to be no other rust. This is proof that the car has spent its life in a dry Southwest climate. The owner recently performed the necessary services including an oil change, tune-up, and spark plugs. The car is ready to be enjoyed.
In fact, if you are a touring enthusiast, the owner will pay for the entry fee to this year’s Targa California (http://www.targacalifornia.com/). This is a 3-day vintage car driving event that would be the perfect way to enjoy this Century Turbo.
This BMW is really a great value for vintage fun. They are light, nimble and reliable sports sedans. This car is in very good shape and I would classify it as a very nice driver. There are a few minor dings on the body as well as the factory holes for the front bumper (which is available with the purchase). The interior is clean with a few blemishes. The dash does have some cracks as well as a small tear in the driver headrest and the headliner. The A/C is in place, but the compressor stopped working and the belt was removed. The electric side mirrors are not working either and the control knob is missing.
Included with this 320i are some receipts, original magazine article, original Century BMW sales literature, extra key, and tool kit.
