This is a very nice and well cared for original 396 SS. It was purchased new at George Geis Chevrolet in Los Angeles on April 5th, 1969. The original owner raced motorcycles and purchased this El Camino to haul his race bikes to the track on the weekend. His race partner worked at a Chevrolet dealership and helped him get this special optioned SS at a bargain price of $3,647.60.
We have the original Chevrolet Purchase Order as well as the original sales contract. This El Camino was built at the Fremont, CA location. The factory options included the following:

In July of 1988, the original owner sold the car to his neighbor who owned the car until he unfortunately passed away about a year ago. The family asked me to help them find a good home for it. Going through the stacks of receipts, it is obvious that the recent owner really loved this Chevy. The family said it was his baby. He has tons of notes of research from decoding the VIN badge to purchasing new parts.
I was able to speak to the original owner who now lives in Portland, Maine. He said that just before selling the car, he decided to have the engine rebuilt as well as the transmission. He said the car had about 80,000 miles on it when he did this. Shortly afterwards, he sold the car to the current owner. In 1994, the owner began a nearly 2 year process of stripping the car down to the bare metal and completely repainting it in its original factory color. The only modifications made were the installation of a Grant steering, a new radio, and a pair of Recaro bucket seats. He also installed a Kenwood tape player as well as an Alpine alarm with keyless entry. We have the original bench seat and it is included with the car. The bench seat is in great condition except for the stitching is coming apart on the driver side headrest. Both owners used this car strictly as a weekend car. Since 1988, the current owner only put another 10,000 miles on it.
Because the car has been in storage for the past couple of years, we had a local AAA approved auto shop go through the car. This shop has experience working with older muscle cars, as the owner’s personal car is a ’66 Chevelle. All in all, they said the car was a good car and obviously owned by someone who took care of it. They said that it looked like the owner had redone the front suspension as well as all the brakes (including drums, cylinders, shoes, and lines). It did need a few items taken care of since it had been sitting. So, the family invested another $1,500 having the following items serviced:
New valve cover gaskets
All lights checked, wiring fixed, new bulbs so everything works properly
Battery secured
New steering box and rag joint
The tires appear to have plenty of tread left, but are more than 10 years old.
The car is in great condition considering it is an older restoration. The body looks nice. There are a few small chips and small door ding on the right rear fender, but not much else. The interior looks nice as well except for the cracks on the dash pad. We have a nice “crack-free” replacement dash pad that is included with the car.
Besides the pages of receipts, we also have every California registration since it was first sold.
This El Camino comes complete with extra keys, original owner’s manuals, shop manuals, California black license plates, original photographs, car cover, original bench seat, and extra parts.
