Vehicle Detail

This is a 1997 Jaguar XK8 convertible that is a great-running car EXCEPT for a bad gas tank! On a trip to Oregon from Florida it averaged 27.4 mpg typically driving at around 70 mph. I don’t think we’ve ever gotten much less than 20mpg with it. The car sat for about 3 months while we spent last summer in California and when we tried to start it the car acted like it was out of gas. I shot engine starter into the intake and it started right up but immediately quit. I went into the trunk and checked the fuel pump relay. It was fine but the electric fuel pump inside the gas tank wasn’t running. I measured the voltage going to the fuel pump and it was fine also…. Yep, bad fuel pump. Ordered a new one and then read up on how to remove the fuel tank to replace it (it’s inside the tank). Leave it to British engineering…. You have to remove the entire rear suspension to access the fuel lines so you can disconnect them to get the fuel tank out. They’re above the differential under a safety blanket. Well, I did that and removed the fuel tank. Sure enough, the fuel pump was locked up solid but there was a lot of rust inside the tank so I’m guessing that it got into the fuel pump and jammed it up. I tried to find someone who could clean the gook out of the tank but the closest I could find was 1200 miles north of us in Pennsylvania so I tried to find another tank in a wrecking yard. Problem is, XK8s are too nice of a car to wind up in wrecking yards and I couldn’t find one! The dealers want almost $1,000 for a new tank so that was out. Anyhow, here’s a great running car that needs gas tank work to get it back on the road. I have all the parts, the complete suspension, and gas tank in the garage. The suspension removal and installation is actually fairly simple and could easily be bolted back in by the buyer so the car can be put on a trailer or tow vehicle. We already have 3 other cars so we decided to just sell the Jag rather than go any further. It has about 127,000 miles and doesn’t use any oil. We’ve always used Mobil 1 synthetic and the engine still runs smooth as glass. The front seats both have seam tears in the upholstery commensurate with their age. The clear coat on the paint has some spots starting to bubble up. This would be a great car to fix back up and drive for another 100,000 miles. This is a beautiful road car and has been extremely reliable. We’ve only had three problems with this car: We replaced the starter at 110,000 miles, the thermostat housing at 125,000 miles and now the fuel pump. If nothing else, this car is full of good part and could be sold off in pieces if someone had the time and place to do it. Just the rear suspension is a favorite amongst custom car and hot-rod builders and typically brings $1,500 just by itself. The engine is a 4 liter V8 rated at 295 horsepower. The front seats are electric and could be recovered for use in a custom car. They’re extremely comfortable! New restoration leather covers are available on the internet. The car is in the panhandle of Florida in the city of Crestview which is just off of Interstate 10 and directly north of Eglin AFB. Payment MUST be made by PAYPAL. Any questions? Call 850-902-1328.
