NO EXCEPTIONS. Up for bid is this ultra cool and very unusual 1968 Chrysler Newport "Sportsgrain" Convertible. Sold in the springtime of 1968, these wood sided Newport's were a special edition made by Chrysler. Numerous Chrysler experts have concluded that there were 965 Sportsgrain hardtops made and only 174 CONVERTIBLES. The sportsgrain option was offered early again in 1969 and with very few being ordered, the option was discontinued early in the 1969 model year and none built. The sportgrain option was similar to the styling of the Chrysler Town and Country station wagons but in a sportier package. This 1968 Newport Sportsgrain has been restored and looks fantastic. It is one of the neatest and crowd-drawing cars we've ever restored. It looks like nothing else on the road and always is the hit of the local car shows. Since we acquired the Newport, we repainted it in the original yellow color (and removed all the old and cracked woodgrain prior to paint), replaced all the woodgrain using high-quality automotive thick vinyl woodgrain (not cheap adhesive woodgrain) along the sides and re-wrapped the side moldings in woodgrain, like original. The chrome bumpers were rechromed previously and still looks great. All the stainless trim is in very good condition and still shine with a few minor dings from age. The interior looks good. We had the driver's seat reupholstered using the correct white metallic vinyl. The remainder of the interior is original and looks great, the dashpad is original and uncracked, the boot looks great, the original AM radio still works and the original door/side panels look great as well. All the gauges work and function as they should. The air conditioning does not function. All the components look to be in place, but we have never looked into why it doesn't work. The top is in very good condition with no rips or tears and the power top works perfectly. Mechanically the Newport runs great. The 383 2-Barrel V8 and 3-speed automatic transmission run and shift fine. We've driven the Newport to several car shows since it was restored and we have had no issues with it. The Chrysler just floats along and drives like a dream. It is very comfortable and smooth. We located the original build sheet for the Chrysler underneath the back seat cushion. It is still legible and most of the sheet is intact. The build sheet shows the VIN number and all the order/option codes. At the very bottom of the build sheet, it states "ADD DI NOC CODE 366". Di Noc was/is the manufacturer for the woodgrain appliques for woodgrain wagons, etc. during this era. See the photos of the build sheet at the bottom of the auction. If you're looking for a very cool and super rare convertible, don't let this Newport Sportsgrain pass you by. Chances are it will be a long time before you'll ever see another one, if at all. The reserve will not be disclosed during the auction. If you email a question asking only what the reserve is it will not be responded to. The vehicle can be stored free of charge for up to two weeks after the auction has ended, or longer with prior notification and agreement. Vehicles left past the agreed storage date are subject to a $15.00 per day storage fee. We are open for vehicle pick up during the week. We are not open on the weekend, but can make an exception with prior arrangement. Sorry but we spend weekends with our families. VEHICLE REGISTRATION, SALES TAX, SMOG, FEES, ETC: We are a licensed California auto dealer. The state requires that if you're out of state and plan on coming here to pick up the vehicle, you need to know that California law REQUIRES the buyer to pay sales tax, registration, and smog fee's (if applicable) if they pick up the car and drive it away. This is still the LAW even if you put the car on your trailer and it never touches the California roadway. If you're out of state, avoid can avoid all of these required fees by having your car shipped to your state. This in most cases is less expensive anyway by the time you figure gas, lodging, and other expenses. If you're an out of state buyer but picking up the vehicle and driving home, we can reduce the state required registration to a $16.00 one trip permit, but the other fees will still apply. If you are a California resident, we collect sales tax, registration fee, and a $58.25 smog inspection fee (if applicable). We then provide you with temporary registration in the window so you can legally drive the vehicle until your title and license plates arrive in the mail. All sales require a $55.00 DMV and paperwork fee. This covers the costs of our mailings of the title, bill of sale, license plates if required, and going to the DMV for you on your behalf. PAYMENT INFORMATION: Please follow the rules of the auction after it is completed, regarding deposit and full payment deadlines. Anyone not following through with the auction will be reported to Ebay and NEGATIVE FEEDBACK will be left. There is a clear title on the vehicle. A non-refundable deposit of $500.00 must be received by me within 24 hours of the close of auction via Paypal, money order, or cashiers check, sent via overnight express mail. After that, full payment needs to have been received within the next five business days of the close of auction. WE DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL AS PAYMENT FOR THE BALANCE DUE. In other words, full payment balance after deposit is due 5 business days after the auction close date, and must be paid via cash (in person only for cash), cashiers check, or money order.
