Vehicle Detail
NO RESERVE. I hate reserve auctions. Five day auction due to upcoming holiday. This is my prized 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ. I have not been able to drive and enjoy this car much lately and nothing looks to change in the future, so I am now resigned to passing the torch to a new owner. I say passing the torch because it is obvious that every owner of this car has gone the extra mile to keep it in pristine condition. I have had the car for 12 years. It has never let me down. I always have it garaged and covered. The car originally sold at Harry's Cadillac/Pontiac in Ashville, NC and still has the original dealer plate on the trunk. I also have the ORIGINAL window sticker, build sheet, and mint condition owner's manual. I brought the car out to Northern CA in 1999. The car runs and drives great. It starts right up every time and shifts nicely. Recently, my commuter car was in the shop and I was forced to drive the GP to work and back for 3 weeks at 100 miles per day round trip. The car performed beautifully. I managed to piss off every Prius driver in Northern CA (there are a lot) while getting thumbs up from numerous people. I will never forget the guy in a brand new Mercedes CL600 giving me the fist pump, I did not expect that one! General: This car looks very, very close to the way it left the factory in 1971 and I have tried to keep it in stock condition.. Triple Green with Tropical Lime code 043 exterior, Dark Green Vinyl top, and Jade green interior. Numbers matching YC code 455, rochester 4 bbl, 12 bolt (non posi) 3.07 rear end, TH400 auto transmission. Options include PS, PB (front disc), PW, power driver seat, cruise control, AC, tinted glass, heavy duty "duel snorkel" air cleaner, pin striping and side moldings, rally gauges and clock. Body, Paint, Interior: The body on this car is fabulous. I remember the day I first saw the car when it was delivered. I could not believe it was so nice. All the panels are laser straight, no dings, nothing. Car was repainted in original 043 code Tropical Lime at 99,000 miles due to the hood and deck fading. No body work was needed. The paint is in show condition with only minor flaws. It is a high quality base coat clear coat paint job with all trim, bumpers, fenders, etc removed prior to painting. At the same time, the top was also replaced and is also in show condition. There is no rust on the body other than very, very minor surface rust up underneath in out of the way places. Most people would call this car rust free. A small area of rust was repaired when the vinyl top was replaced, which is typical for any vinyl top car of this vintage. The chrome on the bumpers is believed to be original chrome and in excellent condition for it's age. There are some scratches and a nick here and there, very minor. The rear bumper has some pepper spots you can see if you get within a foot. Nothing breaking the surface. Shine is excellent. Stainless trim is all straight and in great shape. All lens are clear and not cracked. The front and rear seats were professionally recovered in the original stock color, grain, and pattern due to a previous owner who put non stock cloth seats covers on. The entire interior is fabulous. Door panels are undamaged, no fading on anything, dash has no cracks, new carpet, original radio is intact so no radio bezel damage. I never rest my left arm on the driver door just to make sure that door panel stays in pristine condition. Console is undamaged. Glass is in great shape. Windshield is basically new since it was replaced when the car was painted. The car smells like a new car inside. Headliner is flawless as well. Weather stripping is mostly new and in great shape. Engine bay is semi detailed and very clean, but it will need fine detailing and cleaning to make it real nice. I have not shown the car since 2005. It has won several awards at knowledgeable Pontiac shows and won best of class at a large local festival show. In the right hands, this car could be brought up to a very high standard. Drivetrain: Car has a numbers matching stock code YC 455 the starts right up and runs strong. It has never been apart. No smoking or funny noises. TH400 shifts fine.I drove it for 3 weeks to work and back it had no problems. The rear drums, pads, brake cylinders, master cylinder, gear oil, and axle bearings were replaced about 1600 miles ago. Brakes work fine. Engine has a slight oil leak. Probably rear main seal. It loses about a half quart every 1000 miles as far as I can tell. Dual flowmaster exhaust sounds great and is in new condition. Sometimes I don't even listen to the radio! Accessories: Cruise control works, PW work good, steering is good, power driver seat works when the car is running, but is sluggish when the car is off. AC is completely intact but blows warm. All the controls work.It was working about a year or two ago, but I do not use it very often. Lights and turn signals work. All dash lights work. Drivers door sticks a little when you open it from inside. Works fine from the outside. I am going to try and trouble shoot that before the auction end. All gauges work including the rally clock which I believe was converted to quartz movement since it runs quiet and keeps accurate time.Stock Delco AM/FM radio was working but sound was lousy coming from stock mono speaker in dash, when I disconnected to install CD player under passenger seat with 10 disc changer in trunk. Player and CD changer no longer in car, but connections remain for your system. Wipers work fine in both speeds but washer is not working.. Spare tire is completely original and never been down. Its basically a NOS rally wheel. Tire has factory check marks. Spatter paint and side boards in trunk are show quality. Original trunk weatherstrip is showing some age, but not too bad. A new weatherstrip will go with the car. I put grey carpet in the trunk because I do not like the factory thin matting they used. I do have a brand new repro and original mat that go with car as well as leftover seat and carpet material. Car has 455 emblems on lower front rockers because I got tired of people asking if it had a 350 in it! I used reproduction rocker panel moldings with the 455 emblems so I still have the original moldings. Rally wheels are in great shape with brand new repro center cap emblems from Ames Performance. Tires still have good tread. There are many parts on the car that only have about 6000 miles on them including the water pump, belts, hoses, alternator, battery cables, master cylinder, power steering hose, dual flow master exhaust. Hope I did not forget anything. I love this car and I hope it gets into the hands of someone who can take it to the next level. Feeling that smooth power behind that long hood will put a smile on your face. Its a great cruiser. Please remember that this is a 40 year old car and is being sold as is. There are some minor issues that need attention and the car is priced accordingly. I have tried to describe this car as best I can. This is a low production car with only about 3300 SJs built in 1971. Good luck finding a nicer true, unmolested SJ car for my opening NO RESERVE bid. Winning bidder to send $500 non refundable deposit via Paypal within 48 hours of auction end and complete payment by the end of one week. The car and title will not be released until final payment is received and cleared. If you live in CA, we can work on transferring the vanity plates 71SJ455 if you like. I will help with any shipping arrangements as needed. I would suggest a covered trailer if its going a long distance. Thanks and good luck!
