Vehicle Detail
1980 Chevrolet El Camino Project Car This El Camino was taken off the road some time ago. My Father who lives in PA, drove it around untill he started having transmission problems. My brother bought it from him. We trailered it to NJ. My brother became strapped for cash and sold it to our mom and stepdad. My stepdad repaired some brake issues, and parked it for a later project. We had plans to restore it and make a daily driver out of it, but we never got around to it. We recently changed the air filter and thermostat, and recharged the battery. The six cylinder starts and runs nice and quiet. It moves forward and stops good too. Unfortunately, the transmission seems to go forward in all the gears, including reverse. We are not sure what is wrong, but we will include a spare transmission that has been sitting in the garage, with the sale of the vehicle. I am not sure of the condition of the spare transmission, but would advise replacing the gaskets and seals before installing it. The car has posi traction (both tires spun in the gravel), Cragar Mags, sun roof, electric windows and locks, a.c., tilt steering, cruise control, bucket seats, center console, etc. The body seems ok, and I did not see any rust issues. The odometer reads 17152. We believe it to be 117152. The last Title reads 156780, but we believe this was a number someone made up in the DMV line when they realized they had forgotten to write the correct mileage down. Regardless, it's a thirty year old project car, so mileage should be irrelevant at this point. We tested the electrical items. The lights seem to be ok. The windows go up and down. The radio works, but the front speakers are shot. The gas gauge reads over full, so we think it is not working. The speedometer bounced around while we drove it in the driveway, so something is up with that. The dash fan and windshield wipers are not working, but it may be a fuse issue. I could not test the air conditioning, but assume it does not work. The interior is ok, but could use attention. I would not attempt to drive this car home, but I don't think it would take much to make it road worthy. It would make a great classic car, father and son project. CONSIDER THIS A PROJECT CAR. This car is sold as-is with no warranty expressed or implied. Some questions have been asked about the undercarriage, frame and floors. The El Camino was raised and placed on ramps & jack stands to allow access for pictures. Please refer to the added pictures of the undercarriage. The passenger side floor board definitely needs replacement. The driver side is not too bad, but if you replace one side, you might as well replace both sides. The frame behind the driver side rear wheel has a rust hole in the side. It appears there is plenty of room to weld a patch. Please refer to the picture. The muffler has a dent and will need to be replaced. It is raining now. I did not see or feel any leaks from the sun roof. The interior is dry. But again, I make no guarantees on anything. Incedently the material from the head liner and sunvisors have come loose in some areas.
