Vehicle Detail

Tags are good until 2012, title is clear, passed smog, and just had major brake work. A Westfalia, or Westy, can be used as a daily driver as well as a camper. It fits in regular-sized parking spaces (about 15' long and 75" wide) and is low enough (under 7 feet) to make it into almost any garage. This vehicle has been serviced by a German car specialist, always using synthetic oil (burns no oil). I can get 23mpg on the highway! The transmission was recently serviced, and ALL SEALS were replaced (within the last 10k miles). Vanagon automatics typically make 250,000 with proper maintenance. The odometer reads about 137,000 miles, which is nearly accurate-- the van had been sitting for a while when I obtained it the other year, and the speedo cable had to be reconnected. For how it runs, and how well the mechanic found the functioning to be, the mileage is about accurate. Fortunately, the vehicle has spent its life on the West Coast where roads are not salted, so there is no known rust on the undercarriage. There is a seam going on at the top of the vehicle (see picture), but it has been treated and is stable. There is a small spot by the windshield, about 1/2 cm x 2 cm. It, too, has been treated. The paint and interior on this van are in good condition compared to other Westies of the same age! This is the full camper with the kitchenette. It can seat and sleep 4 people. I have included a thermoelectric cooler (it plugs into the lighter or into a wall socket) that works much better than Westfalia fridges. The propane tank needs a seal, but rather than deal with it, I use a portable stove that can easily be stored in one of the many cabinets of the van. The sink uses water from a plastic tank that tastes awful, but the basin and its drain are good, so you are better off using your own water source than the sink (which is probably why the former owner removed the spigot). All kitchen equipment is included! You get a set of IKEA pots as well as serving utensils and service for 4 (flatware, plates, cups, etc.). The pop-top is in fair to good condition, with a good mattress, The tent itself has some patching done here and there, and is free of major rips or holes. It opens and closes well.. The single window in the tent comes without a screen, but it zips open and closed nicely. Linens and pillows for 4 are included as well. The bike rack and bikes are included in the deal (bikes are similar to those shown, rack is the same)! Two unisex mountain bikes go on the rack that you see in the picture. To put it simply, this Vanagon Westfalia camper is ready to go camping today. Other features: a stereo with CD player and external jack for MP3/IPOD etc. Being a Vanagon GL instead of the base Vanagon gets you the nicer cloth interior. Rotating Captain's chairs are present and operational (in front). There are curtains that cover every single window. There is even a snap-on cover for the windshield (to be used only when parked) and a snap-on bug screen to use on the rear cargo opening. You are able to leave the sliding door and the tailgate open without using up the battery. There is also a starter kill (it's the orange thing below the gearshift)-- pull it out and your Westy will still be there after that long hike! Rubber floormats are present in the front. Recent work done: the transmission as mentioned, new enormous Sears Die-Hard battery, regular SYNTHETIC oil changes, a recent brake service, a recent radiator service, and the transmission cable has been replaced. The tires have about 25,000 miles left on them, and a full-sized spare is present. The rear brake cylinders and the master cylinder were just replaced. The tachometer is not working, but on a van with an automatic transmission, it really has no relevance. This van came with cruise control and air conditioning. 25+ years later, they do not work. I have never spent a dime or a second to see what is up with them, because they do not matter to me. Please do not ask about the cruise control or A/C. The controls are present, and the rear A/C is in the cabinet above the rear seat (see picture) where it would normally be found, but I have no further knowledge about them. The rear bumper is not so pretty, which is normal for Vanagons (you can never find a used rear bumper, only front ones, which tells you it's normal). As with every Vanagon I have worked with, the outside mirrors will only stay up if they have little clamps on them (and therefore they have them). Warranty: This has been a great vehicle to own, and service has been regular. It is a 26 year-old vehicle, however, so perfection cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, this vehicle comes AS IS WHERE IS, with NO WARRANTY expressed or implied. Purchaser is responsible for obtaining the vehicle at his/her own expense. I have shipped a car before and know of a good establishment if you are interested.
