Vehicle Detail
This 1942 Lincoln Continental Coupe (one of two hundred) was in a collection of classic and sports cars and motorcycles owned by an elderly friend who has passed away. It has been on jack stands in dry storage for many years. My father, who is in his eighties and was a mechanic all his life, and who had worked on 12 cylinder Lincolns in his father's repair shop in the forties, helped me to get the car running. He insisted that we lubricate the cylinders a couple of weeks prior to starting it just to make sure it wasn't turned over with dry pistons. We put fresh plugs in it and fuel in the float bowl and it fired right up and didn't make any unusual mechanical noises. Not too bad after a few decades of dormancy! The brakes have not been tested. We did not try them for fear of the wheels becoming stuck, potentially immobilizing the car. Assume they are not functional, and will need attention. The transmission has not been tested, and I don't recall ever having heard a word about whether or not my friend ever drove the vehicle; he loved looking at cars more than driving them. It was in storage well before I met him twenty years ago. The body of this auto is very solid. There is one hole in the passenger side rocker panel about the size of a tennis ball, which is the only rust on the vehicle. There is no underbody rust. It had been painted many years ago, probably in the fifties or sixties, and has a nice patina. It has never been a rusty auto. It could be driven as is. All of the original trim is there. The bumpers are beautiful. Most of the rest of the chrome is of good quality, with only the headlight and tail light pieces needing rechroming to be very presentable. The original fender skirts, which are currently not on the car, go with the it. They are in good condition. The glass is in good condition. The original interior of this vehicle is very nice. The steering wheel has some checking and there is of course a little patina overall on the interior, but I would not do a thing except have it professionally cleaned. The interior is remarkable for its age. I have decribed the surfaces and mechanical aspects of this vehicle to the best of my ability. Feel free to come inspect it personally. The vehicle will not be moved from its current location, however, until it is picked up by the purchaser or shipping agent. This was a premium car of its era, the kind Clark Gable and other movie stars of that time period drove. There is no way to describe how it feels sitting inside this piece of American automobile history. On May-27-11 at 14:42:48 PDT, seller added the following information: Anyone interested in more photos can send me a message with your email and I will be happy to send them to you. I did try to add more pics to the auction but could not put them all on..
