Here is an original SS 396 Chevelle that I have been working on for the last year and a half. pretty much everything you can think of has been done, redone, gone through, and made better. We will start at the motor: 1968/69 396 HO passenger car engine. Motor completely gone through, with 10/10 on the crank, and a ISKY cam that I have no idea what the duration is (great loap at idle). Heads were cut and polished by local machine shop here in Marianna about 4 years ago.......all new valves (as big as would fit) springs, lifters, push rods, pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump....you name it. Spent 6 grand on parts and work. Motor has March Serpentine belt system, vacume assist tank, aluminium radiator, ho water pump, holley 750 carb (could easy take a 950 or 1000 cfm), chrome everything, and stainless hosebraid everywhere I could put it. Upgraded to HEI style distributor (very hot accel) Dual electric cooling fans with computerized thermostat....kicks one on low at 125....med at 150...both low at 190.....both med at 200 both high at 220. If Ac is on, one fan is on med...so on. Transmission is a 700r.....bult local, and is very strong. Have a switched lock up TQ, so you dont have to deal with the constant up and down shift in town. Car runs out great on the highway. HI Torque Super fast starter. 120 Amp Alt. Two battery (one in front, on hidden in trunk for stereo). Body: Body was straight as an arrow and all original SS 396 4 speed car. Fellow I bought it from was getting a divorce, and had to dump it before she got a piece of it, or it never would have been sold. Rear passenger quarter had rust, so it was cut out and replaced, other than that no rust on the car. Rear end was locked up due to rust with no oil in it, so I replaced it with a 69 chevelle take out 12bolt posi...new clutches. Hochkins springs all around, CPP big Breakes on all four wheels, with a mini chrome power booster. All new glass was installed, and all new factory wire harness (upgraded from glass fuse to mini blade type) No universal......made for a 1969 Chevelle..Painless. New bumpers, tail and headlights, all emblems, grill and and headlight bezels. Paint is a Spies Hecker paint, with same clear. Hood and top have been color sanded and buffed, nothing else.........paint is really slick, but could be better if you want to spend the time. Its been in two shows, and has won 6 trophies, two are for paint, so its pretty good. Tilt wheel, with MOMO steering wheel, 2001 volvo leather 6 way power heated seats were used (front and back), but the original seat brackets were not cut out, so should you want to put original interior back in, the worst would be you might have to replace carpet because of the new holes required for these seats. Power retractable shoulder harness seat belts installed. Car has original power windows, but I did put relays in the doors to help make them go up and down like a new car without making the lights go dim.........everything works. Custom door panels were made, but thats only because I hate the original, again I was very careful not to mess anything up so you could put the original back in. Custom made trunk surround to accomodate Stereo amp and battery ( eveything can be taken out with out damage) Custom made console with Pioneer Stereo with DVD, GPS, rear camera (look just below tag), about 600 watt JBL amps.....memphis speakers...etc. NOTICE THE DASH IS NOT CUT UP. Car has been lowered about 2 inches all around, stance is excellent. OLD AIR AC was put in (car had an original AC unit, but it couldnt be repaired, so i opted to replace it with a much better after market unit). Problems: The only problems with the car I can think of are: Been put together for about 7 months, so the car needs to be gone over and everything tightened up and checked. One or two nicks on door edges that need to be touched up. Ash tray needs to be installed. AC has never been charged, but I will take care of that before car leaves.
