Vehicle Detail

1989 Dodge Ram W250 4x4 Cummins turbo diesel truck with two compartment tank waste vegetable oil system. Drive this truck on free restaurant grease or bio-diesel or regular diesel and get 20 mpg on the highway. Truck is in good shape and has no body damage. 138,220 original miles, 3 owner vehicle. I have all the owner’s manuals, build sheet and window sticker for this truck. All service was done at the dealer until 94,000 miles when it was purchased by the second owner, I bought it June 28, 2008 with 131,000 miles on it and have only put 7,000 miles on it in 3 years. I bought it because it was intriguing and a neat truck but I don’t have any real use for it. The motor fires up in less than a full rotation-no glow plug needed. Everything works on the truck except for the cruise control. The paint is in good shape except flakes missing off of the camper. The truck is a 5 speed manual with 4 wheel drive. The front axle has been outfitted with Selectro Locking hubs that are easy to engage or disengage. It has a Spicer 70 rear axle and a Spicer 60 front w/Bendix sliding caliper. This truck is heavy duty. The rear drums were turned at 134,780 miles and the shoes converted from the smaller 2-½” wide to 3” wide for better stopping power. The axle gears are 3.54. This solid axle front with leaf springs tracks great on the highway. The second generation Cummins trucks have a wandering problem due to the coil spring and four bar front suspension. The truck is set up for towing with a 2” receiver hitch. The battery is in great shape, it is a calcium chloride group 31 battery designed for industrial use. It is fitted with a Gem Top utility High Top camper painted to match the truck. The Gem Top is a heavy duty galvanized sheet metal topper with polyurethane foam inside liner for temperature control. The door framing is aluminum tube. The windows are covered with expanded metal to protect them from shifting cargo and to deter theft. All 3 doors lock. You can walk into this camper with a 4’ wide sheet of plywood or drywall on edge!!! I have home-made 8 ribs w/C-clip on the end that can be installed at the height just above the window. Light weight items can be stored up here while camping(foam mattresses, kayak, etc.). It is great for hauling and not having to worry about rain or tarping your load!!! An entire sofa will fit in the back of this truck!! The bed of the truck has a plastic bed liner. Just above the wheel tubs there is a tie down perimeter of ¼” angle iron. The original owner used this for motorcycle tie down. I have installed quickly removable framework with a plywood top for an elevated bed with capabilities of storing camping equipment under the bed. The Gem Top shell has lifting hooks mounted to it so that it can be easily removed with 4 overhead cables. The hooks also double as tie down points for the lumber/pipe rack mounted on the roof. The cross bars are covered with a white plastic to keep from marring your carried materials. The vertical channel supports are made of non-rusting aluminum for a continued nice appearance. It can hold at least 450 lbs up there with no problems and pieces as long as 24 feet. The sides of the truck have full length aluminum running boards that make overhead cargo loading a breeze. The vegetable oil system: You will start this truck on diesel and start driving until the engine is warmed up. The hot engine coolant circulates through the vegetable oil system and lowers the viscosity of the filtered veg oil so that it can be effectively pumped by the injection pump. The cab is fitted with a digital temp gauge that gives you a real time display of the vegetable oil temp coming out of the last heat exchanger. A switch on the dash activates the system and turns a small green light on to let you know that you are running on vegetable oil, because you can’t really tell when you switch unless you run back and smell the exhaust. The system was custom built by the 2nd owner who managed a machine shop. The 25 net gallon aluminum tank is located in the back of the truck inside the shell. The heated pickup tube and final heat exchanger were designed by him in Solidworks 3D cad and machined out of billet aluminum rod and tube, then tig welded together and pressure tested to 175 psi (the cooling system is regulated to around 15 psi). The hoses and Hot-head filter were from Vegpower. The tank selector valve was from Golden fuel systems. The tank has a 110 volt ac water heater coil built into it for preheating, but hasn’t been hooked up. On the dash is a pressure/vacuum gauge to monitor the condition of the veg filter. Also on the dash is an autometer boost gauge and pyrometer for exhaust temp. The real Question everyone is going to want to know: Why are you selling this vehicle that runs on free fuel? I bought it with great intentions and have only used it on several good camping trips. It holds everything you can think of and it gets 20 MPG because I drive very conservatively. The side access doors make it #1 for camping gear access. I have the original tail gate for the truck which seems to never have been used. The driver’s seat area has no holes and is not sunken in. There is a seat cover on it for protection. The truck also has a CB radio and very tall antenna. It has the original am/fm cassette player. The original turbo intercooler has been replaced with one from a 1992 truck. The exhaust housing on the turbo has been replaced with a smaller one for better throttle response and higher boost; I have the stock one if you want it. The turbo is in great shape as is the entire engine. I also idle the truck until the exhaust temp is below 300 degrees before shutting it off. The truck has power steering and intermittent wipers. The washer sprayers are great and spread out a large fan of fluid. This really is a great low mile Dodge Cummins for its age. The tires are in good shape with 60% tread remaining. Chilton’s repair manual included.
