Vehicle Detail

1996 Volkswagen Passat TDI TURBO-DIESEL WAGON. 2nd owner since 1999 and purchased at that time as a certified pre-owned vehicle from a VW dealer. Today there are only 100,000 “babied” original highway miles on this car, sporting the famous VW 1.9 Turbo diesel engine (bio-diesel capable!), coupled to a smooth-as-silk 5-speed manual transmission. A/C, power windows, brakes, steering, door locks, CC, etc.. AM/FM stereo radio w/ factory remote CD player and factory electric sliding sunroof! Most of these cars have several hundred thousand miles on them now and they are still going strong. So, this one of mine is barely even broken-in yet, although it should be noted that this car has been sitting for a few years and so will need some mechanical work to get it back on the road and driving again. This VW gets an incredible 58MPG on the highway and has a fantastic 900 mile cruising range per tank of fuel - all with plenty of power, pep and a very comfortable ride! This Passat is a wonderfully-designed automobile featuring a very smooth and quite running, low-emission Diesel engine that has received numerous accolades from the motoring press. What more could you possibly ask for? What makes this car very special and super-collectible though among all of the Passat TDI’s that were ever made - and EXTREMELY RARE is that it is a WAGON model Passat. These were produced and imported into the US only in very limited quantities and for only the ‘96 and ‘97 model years in this wagon body style. The vast majority of diesel Passats during this time were made in the sedan body style (and they were already in the lower percentage of all the Passats that were imported, as most were the regular gas engine models) . The advantages of the wagon cannot be overstated!! This car offers plenty of extra roominess for lots of cargo and gear, as well as room for additional passengers! This car will easily carry 4x8 sheets of plywood with the rear seats folded down and if you need any more room than that, the rear seats are easily removable as well - talk about convenience! The body is 100% original and the car has NEVER been involved in an accident - and has virtually never even been parked in a parking lot in it‘s lifetime. Both bumper covers in perfect factory original condition! The car is virtually 100% rust-free, except for a couple of small paint chips on the leading edge of the hood that have a little surface rust in them. The paint is also original and although the base color is well-intact, the clear-coat is peeling on the hood and roof panels. A good body shop could probably just re-shoot the clear coat and not have to do a total re-paint of the car? Other than that, the only other marks on the body are where a brain-damaged porcupine sharpened his teeth one night on an area of the body side molding behind the right front wheel and around the right front parking light - absolutely had to see it to believe it! I had the car for only 2-weeks when that happened. This Passat was undercoated and rust proofed when new and the chassis, body panels and floor boards are all in perfect shape! The interior is in super-great condition too and with just a little carpet cleaning (there are some dirt stains around the front floor mats from another set of mats that used to be in the car), it will look virtually brand-new again. The dash is also perfect, with no cracks or damages of any kind and no rips or tears in the seats or headliner. The headliner is in great shape and has no sagging to it at all. The car has been parked for a few years though and so it does need some mechanical work (brakes, tires, battery, possible engine pre-heat solenoid?, and tune-up, fresh fuel, etc.). The engine does turn over freely and I am unaware of any other engine work that it might or might not be in need of to get it roadworthy, as again, I have not driven it for several years now. When I parked it, however, it was only in need of a brake job and some new tires. The car ran absolutely flawlessly at the time I last drove it and had NEVER let me down. I was foolish for not continuing to drive and enjoy it over the past years. I hung onto it though thinking that I would get it into the shop for what it needed done and then put it back into service. However, my situation has now changed and it is time for someone else - perhaps a VW TDI collector who knows just how extremely rare this wagon version car is? - to get it purring again and back on the road to enjoy it - and the incredible fuel savings that this fine car gives. On that note, it’s really funny how 40 MPG’s is supposed to be so great today, while this Passat easily does almost 50% better than that - and with that wonderful German engineering and precision! The car will need new gas lifts for the trunk lid, the rearview mirror needs to be glued back in place, a new radio antenna and as was common on all of these VW’s of this vintage, some of the door handles are non-operational and are in need of either repair or replacement (this was a very common problem at that time with these cars). 100% Clean and Clear title in hand! Car is for pick-up only and will need to be towed/flatbedded from location. Buyer to make and pay for all necessary transportation arrangements. I would be willing to hold the vehicle here for a reasonable period of time, in order to allow buyer time to make suitable towing/transportation arrangements. However, a deposit of $500.00 must be received within 48 hours of auction end and this car must be paid for, in full, within 5 days of auction’s end date. No exceptions! This Passat is also for sale locally and so I reserve the right to end this auction early if it sells beforehand. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding on this very rare Volkswagen TDI wagon! On Apr-27-11 at 08:33:46 PDT, seller added the following information: Thanks to all for your interest in this fine car of mine! I have been receiving many, many questions about ending my listing early and I have gotten a bunch of inquiries about a "buy it now price" on my TDI. Given the fact that this is a very rare car, as most of you already know - with fewer than 1200 of this particular VW ever being made - and with far fewer existing in this country at present with such a similarly low mileage and having no accident history, I think it is only fair to let everyone who is interested have an equal chance at owning it, via this auction format. Accordingly, my advice to everyone is to just bid as high as you feel comfortable bidding on it and in the end, someone will be the very happy and proud new owner of this great Passat Wagon TDI. Thank you for your bids so far and let me say here and now that this Volkswagen will always be fondly remembered by me after it has gone on to its' new owner! Again, thank you and very best of luck to all!
