Vehicle Detail
In May 1970 a young serviceman was returning home from Vietnam. He ordered a 1970 Chevelle SS396 Convertible with a 4-speed. He still owns the car... After arriving in the Philippines where military personnel were sent prior to being transported home to be discharged from active duty he talked with a GM representative that offered discounts to military personnel. "I talked with the GM representative and narrowed down my choices between a 1970 Corvette and a 1970 Chevelle Super Sport. I ultimately chose the Chevelle which was to have a 396/350 engine with cowl induction and a 4-speed transmission. The Chevelle was to be mist green with black racing stripes and a black convertible top." This 1970 Chevelle ss396 Convertible has all of it's factory original numbers matching equipment. It is equipped with the 350 horsepower 396 with a functional cowl induction hood. It has the M20 wide ratio 4-speed transmission, power disk brakes, power convertible top and 336 geared rear end. Three of the factory rally wheels come with the car as well as a set of era correct Cragar slot mags that he installed on the car years ago. The winning bidder will receive the ORIGINAL customer order form (build sheet), window sticker, Protecto Plate and attached pamphlet with this car! I have included pictures of photocopies of the window sticker and build sheet in the auction instead of high resolution photos. The originals are in GREAT condition but in a hobby that has been fraught with forged documentation I would hate to unintentionally aid someone in forging documents on a non-original car. The winning bidder will also receive the original owners manual and the Chevrolet Consumer Information pamphlet that was included in the original sale of this car as well as several registration papers and miscellanous documents aquired over the years. This is a very rare car. Out of 487,969 1970 Chevelles built only 7,522 were convertibles or aproximately 1.5%. Total SS equipped production was aproximately 62,372 which includes hardtops and convertibles. Currently only 6 L78 375hp equipped convertibles are known to exist. Only 28 documented LS6 454 convertibles are known to exist. 1088 L34 350hp equipped convertibles left the factory. How many are left? Out of these, how many are 4-speeds? When you break down the options it is entirely possible that this is the only 1970 Chevelle Convertible that was built with these exact options. There is also a distinct chance that you are looking at the only Mist Green L34 4-speed Convertible left. It is a numbers matching original owner car. If you are a hardcore GM Guru and can further break down these numbers feel free to e-mail me. This car was driven in a parade 20 years ago and has been parked in the same garage since. It will need a complete restoration as the pictures will attest to. The rear quarters were replaced sometime in the eighties. They were done well for a driven car at that time but should probably be replaced for a perfect restoration. There are two chips in the windshield. The original owner has accumulated some original GM parts over the years such as a shifter boot, battery tray with hold down bracket, and hoodpins with lanyards. Some are in their original packages. The high beam lamps are factory T-3's. I have included pictures of the overall condition of the car. The shifter was replaced early on with a Hurst shifter. The car comes with a straight rear bumper and a good passenger door. The rear bumper pad is missing. Anyone familliar with these cars knows that Goodmark and Year One along with others have all of the parts necessary for restoration. For more pictures of the car and Protecto Plate etc. please click on this link. http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j64/StrayKaat/1970%20Chevelle%20SS396%20Convertible/?start=all The original owner has many fond memories of this car and would like to stay in contact with the new owner to see the car again once it is restored. I have 100% feedback! Bid with confidence on this rare piece of automotive history. With the availability of restoration sources this rare SS396 Convertible can be a great documented addition to the ultimate Chevrolet collection. I reserve the right to end this auction at any time. Bidders with negative or zero feedback must contact me prior to bidding. International bidders welcome. I accept paypal. $1000 due within 24 hours of auctions end with the balance due to owner upon pickup of car. Cleared certified bank check or cash before signing over clear title. Car must be transported within 7 days of auctions end. Please e-mail me with any special conditions before bidding to be aproved by owner. Good luck bidding! On Apr-11-11 at 18:59:23 PDT, seller added the following information: Page down to the bottom of the auction to see the e-mail. It was brought to my attention by an astute e-bayer that the build sheet in the pictures is not the correct build sheet for this car! The correct build sheet was found today under the rear seat, is being removed professionally by an upholsterer tomorrow and WILL be included in this auction. This is a one owner car and IS authentic! Pictures are now posted of the original build sheet on the Photobucket link with more to come after removal. On Apr-12-11 at 14:28:44 PDT, seller added the following information: As promised the real build sheet was professionally removed from the back seat today. Click on the Photobucket link and view the first three pictures to see the real build sheet for this car. Although it is in lesser condition than the one thought to be correct earlier in the auction you can see it has the original owners name as seen on the window sticker, Protecto Plate and attached pamphlet. It also matches the vin#. Thanks again to the knowledgeable GM community for helping us correct this mistake further autheticating this REAL one owner 1970 SS396 L34 Convertible! On Apr-13-11 at 19:28:25 PDT, seller added the following information: Yes it is a Positraction axle with 331 gearing. The 336 stated earlier was from the wrong build sheet. I will be posting closeup pictures of the build sheet and the original GMAC payment plan booklet that also comes with the car on the Photobucket link.
