Vehicle Detail
1961 DODGE POLARA “TIME CAPSULE CAR” I have had over a hundred classic cars come through my hands over the years. Out of all those cars I’ve only had about five like this, and I call them “Time Capsule” cars. This 1961 Dodge Polara is called “Thelma” for the original owner of the car Thelma Johnson. This car is fantastic as it has spent most of it’s time indoors and always in dry south Texas. I hold all the original paper work on the car. The car was bought brand new on 8-4-1961 at O.R. Mitchell Chrysler here in San Antonio Texas for a grand total of $3,735,87. It came with factory Air Conditioning, Power Steering and Power Brakes. Thelma ordered an add on “Astrophonic” radio and “Remote Mirror.” The body of this car is truly amazing. After 50 years I haven’t noticed a single dent in the body anywhere. Nor have I discovered any rust holes or even bubbles in the body. The trunk pan has some rust scaling and a few small holes. The front grill is very nice. There is one small ding up high near the hood on the grill. All the glass is excellent and all the windows roll up and down. The chrome is also in nice shape. The “Polara” logo on the front passenger fender is broken and the under flat aluminum checkering has a small section missing on the passenger rear door. Thelma’s interior will blow you away! The seats up till two-weeks ago had been under plastic covers for 50 years. The past owner had cut it open to show it off, so I went ahead and removed it except the rear seat bottom. The door panels and seats are truly amazing, there in very nice condition. The cockpit of this vehicle is a true work of art! The design is superfine. The “Astrophonic” radio even still works, though the speaker paper is bad and is the dash pad. They will need to be replaced. The car has 89,000 original miles and I brought it home after pulling it literally out of a barn and I have the pictures to prove it! It hadn’t ran in a few years. The man I bought the car from had bought it six years ago and had the fuel tank cleaned, the carburetor rebuilt, fuel pump rebuilt etc. I had “Thelma” running within an hour after getting her home. The engine is the original 361 V8 and there’s no knocks, tapping or smoke puffing. It is working through old fuel and surely could use a good tune-up and servicing. The master brake cylinder seems bad and I have located them on eBay now for about $78.00. The parking brake works well and the car can be driven up on a trailer now. However...if the high bidder buys the master cylinder I will install it for FREE just to help. The transmission is “push button” and goes in drive and reverse fine. With no brakes I have NOT got the car up to speed. The tires all hold air but are old and should be replaced. All the original hubcaps are in the trunk but are in bad shape as they were found outside the barn. The paint is the original color but seems it’s been repainted years ago. It looks a bit aged but likely could be buffed out to still hold a shine. There are paint chips on the hood and trunk etc. Please call Houston Wills at 808-205-8414 before bidding if you have questions or want specific pictures etc. I’d be glad to help you! The car is at my home in San Antonio Texas. Thanks again!PAYMENT AND STORAGE A $500 deposit is required from the winning bidder, due electronically via PayPal within 24 hours after the auction ends, to hold the vehicle.
