Up for auction at no reserve a very rare 1966 Split Window VW Bus Camper conversion. The camper has an aluminum elevating roof that has large sliding screened windows on either side. This type of top was normally installed by an Elkhart, Indiana based company based called Freeway Traveler on Dodge Vans in the 1960's. However you could order the roof directly from them to put on another type of van. When the roof is folded up it lays flat on the top of the vehicle and does not protrude into the passenger compartment in any way. This VW Bus was converted from a base Kombi model to a Camper by the Gypsy Camper conversion company based in Gardena California using the Freeway Traveler elevating roof. I purchased this Camper Bus this summer in Orange County, CA and drove it cross country back to my home in North Carolina after which I took it on a few camping trips to the NC mountains this fall. Being a Southern California Bus it is very solid bodywise. It comes with the original Gypsy camping interior (sink, icebox, popup table, door cabinet) which needs to be refinished and is currently not installed. Currently the interior consists of stock gray vinyl 1/3 2/3 seats up front, birch wood paneling some of which has been replaced, a full width foldout camper rear seat, and Deluxe model panels on the front seat partition, a burgundy Oriental Rug covers a 100% rust free floor in the load area. A stock 1600cc Dual Port Motor rebuilt by the previous owner in CA with 90% new parts powers it down the road riding on brand new BF Goodrich All Terrain Load Range C Off road Tires. The braking system was serviced by AJ Sims in Orange this summer. It has a Pioneer CD player wired to Polk Audio fronts and 6X9 Rear Alpine Speakers. Additional extras include a gearshift lock (to prevent theft), cargo door jack point side step, vintage surfboard racks mounted on the aluminum poptop, and foglights.
